After musing the current state of action cinema (ergo: there isn't really any) I promptly came to the conclusion that the only hope for this middle aged nobody was either Scott Adkins or Michael Jai White. Nothing else was sating my passion for those long lost heady days of Stallone, Van Damme, Norris, Bronson, Schwarzenegger or Seagal - now all we had were spandex superheroes or loud fellas driving cars real fast. The age of "shoot first, ask questions later whilst dropping a cool one liner" were things of a now derided past and so I spend my days trying to reclaim that "action high of the '80s" and it seems we've only got those two guys still doing the trick… anyway, I digress. Let's get on with the show featuring one of those last bastions of hope...
In his latest direct to video adventure, Scott Adkins is Cain (note the not so subtle biblical reference), a no holds barred monster of a man who thinks nothing of bashing heads and cracking skulls as if it were a two for one on cranial abuse. Released to visit his dying mother, Cain has other things on his mind and after a bout of “Kick! Punch! Repeat”, he’s off on his toes - hellbent on a mission to locate his long lost brother for reasons yet unknown. Finally gate crashing a low end London pub, Cain assembles a who’s who of underworld goons whom he spends the following 80 minutes explaining not only how he got there, but more importantly… why.
Reuniting with “Triple Threat”, ‘’Accident Man”, “Debt Collector” and ‘Savage Dog” helmer Jesse V. Johnson for another bout of bonse bashing shenanigans - Adkins has yet again pulled another winner out of the bag. In this day of overly CG’d junk where nothing feels real, Adkins and Johnson deliver a bone crunching treat that although low on IQ and story - delivers like an over eager puppy when it comes to a sheer dedication to decimation. Adkins has never been Richard Burton - but he’s certainly improving. His screen presence is assured, commanding the screen whenever he appears and never once do you doubt his abilities - like I mentioned, this guy feels like the real deal and one hopes he continues to create films of this quality for many years to come. I always felt his “Undisputed” Boyka character (and with that his relationship with those films’ director Isaac Florentine) was the zenith of his career, but each subsequent movie with Jesse V. Johnson - it seems Adkins has found another collaborator who knows how to use him. Sure, these new flicks will never match the time I first saw him in Florentine’s “Special Forces” back in the early 2000s - but one cannot deny the sheer balletic energy these guys bring to the table. I’m sure most folks will see these movies and go “oh, yet another fight scene” but man, there’s so much more to it than that. The direction and fight choreography are sublime and Adkins is such a dynamic force of nature, I was almost teary thinking it was the 1980s all over again - these flicks have that “feeling” fused within their DNA and ‘’Avengement” (stupid title and all) is another winner in their most recent filmography.
Dazzler Media’s UK blu-ray release sports a cracking transfer with vibrant audio (wince at each bone crack or go all nostalgic over that wonderfully orchestrated score that is way more than just a wink and a nod to British gangster movies of days gone by), yet no extra special features which is a shame. As I stated before, this one won’t win you over with its generic screenplay and ‘cor blimey style of acting - but if nothing else, it proves Scott Adkins is an action fan’s dream come true with a commanding performance alongside an expertly directed ride that wants nothing more than to give its audience 90 minutes of adrenaline fused entertainment. And man, does it do that. With bells on. Recommended. Add to basket.

Bone crunching

Decent time passer featuring horrible characters giving each other jolly good thrashings…also features various implements and weaponry sporadically appearing to add a bit of variety. The title character is so angry he could slam a revolving door.

Ultra-violent UK revenge thriller with martial arts
Revisado en el Reino Unido 🇬🇧 el 18 de abril de 2021
Wow! Along with Undisputed 2, 3 and 4, this is Scott Adkins at his best. Great performances by the entire cast, with wonderful directing and Hong Kong style fight scenes. I thoroughly recommend this for fans of British crime films and martial arts alike.
