Suzu es una estudiante de secundaria que vive en un pequeño pueblo de Japón con su padre. Es muy buena edición, se nota el cariño que le han puesto. Pero recordemos que el resto de distribuidoras europeas han traído la edición con 4k mientras que aquí nos hemos quedo con el Blu-ray. Esta película si gana mucho más en 4k y es una pena que no llegara a España.

Me encanta Belle. La música, la historia, es muy bonita, emotiva y divertida. Después de verla en el cine le regalé el libro a mi hija y teníamos muchas ganas de poder verla en casa también. Nos declaramos fans de esa película. Muy recomendable para los que les gustan los animes tipo La Chica que viajaba en el Tiempo o similares. La banda sonora es genial.

I've been a fan of Mamoru Hosoda since The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006) and he's never really let me down, even as his contemporary Makoto Shinkai always seem to find significantly more success at the box office. Hosoda's films are usually more about the journey than the destination, but there's really no telling what you're getting into. He's a brilliant director with a knack for telling you a story that you'll remember for the rest of your life. A lot of what makes Hosoda's films great is present in his latest work, Belle, and that's what has this review rated as highly as it is. His trademark expressive character designs and show-don't-tell storytelling tell you right up front who made this film. There are things - songs, moments, lines - from this film that I'll carry with me for a long time, but they do not form a cohesive whole.

Belle draws some things from Hosada's earlier works in broad strokes. A significant majority of the film is spent in a barely-explained virtual world known as "U", and conceptually it works almost exactly as the system did in one of his previous works, Summer Wars (2009). People interface with it through various devices and are represented in the virtual world by avatars of all shapes and sizes. The aesthetic of U is where the main difference is seen - Summer Wars' Oz was bright, bustling, and superflat while Belle's U is more clausterphobic, cyberpunk, and urban. As was the case in Summer Wars, the mechanics of this world will not be explained and you will simply be expected to take the presentation at face value, essentially a demand on your suspension of disbelief in order to save time - just don't think about it.

Back as well is the somewhat frumpy, awkward, cute-even-if-she-doesn't-know-it high school girl with the kind of problems that come with that territory and an amazing hidden talent that drives the plot forward. I can't be too harsh, it's anime, but they all but brick you over the head with her introduction. There is no subtlety, no time to spare for it. You don't really need to know who Suzu is as a person, just her baggage and her talent. You can feel the movie rushing through her introduction like it can feel your disappointment in the fact that none of the cool stuff from the trailer has happened yet.

It's no time at all before you're whisked away into the first (admittedly completely breathtaking) musical number. The music is all excellent, every last song is incredible. The movie feels like it's been draped awkwardly around these musical performances, they're so good. I have to mention as well that the english dub nailed their casting of Suzu in a way that defies belief. Kylie McNeill not only absolutely nails the performances in her own way, she sounds *exactly* like her Japanese counterpart, it's almost uncanny. They both have this slightly-husky intonation and both of them can *really* belt one out, kudos to them both.

The song "U" is one of those that'll stick with you for a long time, it's earworm material. As the sole explanation of the world the majority of the world is set in, it almost works, but not quite.

Look, this is getting a bit long and I can't really explain to you in detail what I disliked about this movie without getting into the specifics of the plot, which I refuse to do in an Amazon review. In a general sense, this film never actually decides what it wants to be about. The middle act is meandering, but not in a way that actually expands upon the world or it's characters, it comes off more as tire-spinning. It feels like visually appealing set pieces are strung together with awkward scene transitions. It's hard to find any motive at all for anyone in the film until one is conjured from thin air for Suzu in a hard left turn in the final act. You'll be asking yourself the entire time why she's doing what she's doing and why people are letting her - some random teenage girl - do it. There's a heart wrenching musical number, though, reminiscent of Summer Wars hanafuda finale, but then there's another 15 minutes of movie after it and they aren't great.

My suspicion is that the pandemic impacted this production significantly, it needed a rewrite that it couldn't afford the time for. The story it ultimately tries to tell *could* be told but without any emotional investment in the barely-written supporting cast, or without any expounding on the world of U and Suzu's place in it, it all just whiffs.

It's an okay movie, it's worth experiencing for sure. The animation artistry is on point, especially in the directorial choices, even if the production values definitely took a pandemic hit (the CGI is poorly blended at times, and there are a handful of times where animation is really obviously re-used). I think that if you're the type to enjoy most of the movies you watch, you'll love this one. If you're one of the overthinking types that's always bothered by plot holes, take a pass on this one.

I'm a bit torn on the star rating, it's really like a B-/C+ movie, like a solid 75/100, which would be 3.5/5 stars. This one is easily Hosoda's weakest work, it's not really a contest.

Belle is Mamoru Hosoda's finest movie yet in my opinion.

The film overall is very powerful because it is trying to say something about who we really are as opposed to how we often carry ourselves with a persona in our every day life, and how much power we can have to influence others if we choose to be ourselves, as opposed to just wearing a mask.

At the end, without giving away too much, it comes down to how we choose to help others; to someone you don't know, even not knowing what others are going through but choosing to be kind instead can make all the difference in the world to that person. I think it's an especially beautiful message in the context of Suzu, the main Character, who shows so much suffering and self-doubt in the beginning of the film, and I wanted to sympathize with her from the very beginning.

At first, I thought some scenes were about Suzu finally finding love, and I realized later that it was more about her empathizing and wanting the best for others and trying to help them however she could. There is another flashback later that connects all of this together very well I thought during a final, memorable performance.

The movie is a bit darker than I thought it would be originally before watching it, and I'm glad the story dealt with heavy themes such as loneliness, death, love, abuse, and ultimately choosing to be a kind and genuine person in a chaotic world where everyone is just trying to make it and be someone.

I watched the movie 3 times in English and once in Japanese with subtitles and I will say that I personally felt the Japanese sub was superior, the subtitles gave better context and understanding to each of the scenes, whereas the English version felt like certain scenes did not translate as well in comparison or were missing context.

I will give credit to the English version's Kylie McNeill, who played Suzu, who I felt had an absolutely
mesmerizing and haunting voice in all of her songs in English.

Kylie's voice and her singing absolutely carried the film in English, where I felt some of the other non singing, voice acting from other characters seemed fairly average in comparison. The ending song "A Million Miles Away" I admit left me with tears in my eyes, especially the grand finale and the implications it had for the plot.

Kaho Nakamura gave a absolutely fantastic and stellar performance as well, and general I am very happy with the overall very high production values of this film. Belle will put modern day Disney to shame in the songs alone, with the lyrics and how the songs were delivered with such passion and emotional resonance.

Another reason I really admire Belle is how the film consists of two different styles of animation. One, with a more Western style of animation with how "Belle" is drawn in the virtual world like something out of a Disney movie from the 90's and then the other half of the movie is the more traditional Japanese animation style "anime" of characters and presentation. It really is unique, and there is not anything else like it that I have seen before. If anything, watch Belle for the fantastic musical songs and overall production value alone, and the emotion behind each of the words that gave greater meaning to the songs themselves.

I would highly recommend Belle to anyone who is a fan of Mamoru Hosoda's films or Anime in general. Or maybe even if you like musicals. LaLa Land, in particular comes to mind even. Belle is truly like no other Anime or movie you will have ever seen before and personally, for me, the Characters and message of the film stayed in my mind long after the credits ended. This is one you will want to watch multiple times.

If you're reading this review you probably already know that Belle looks amazing and the music is just knock out (in Japanese and the English dub) but unfortunately those elements have to do all the heavy lifting because the script is a mess. It feels supisiouly like Suzu's story had been written and then Mamoru Hosoda decided to incorporate Beauty and the Beast. In doing so he had to cut out backstory and character development leaving the viewer to invent relationships and reasons to care about any of them. I can't say much more without spoilers, but to be honest if you read spoilers it isn't going to actually spoil anything because the story makes so little sense. In fact you might even enjoy it more if you've watched or read some spolier rich reviews in which fans try to fill in the gaps and offer work arounds for the plot holes. The most frustrating thing is that you can see that Suzu's story could have been a really lovely movie with strong themes of loss and reconnection, it could have had it all, OR Mamoru Hosoda could have made a straightforward Beauty and the Beast adaptation and that could have been good. Trying to do both at the same time didn't work.

Trying to summarize my feelings on this film is incredibly difficult. The artistic style is beautiful, both the 3D and the 2D animation look amazing and add a unique contrast to the film.

I've seen complaints that the story is very simplistic. I agree that beauty and the beast is a story that has been told and retold so many times that it's difficult to do something new and interesting with it. However this is a story of a child's loss, grief and acceptance in a modern setting and the beauty and the beast elements are more of a setting for the story to take place instead of the main focus. In this regard I think the story excels.

Last but most definitely not least, the soundtrack. Oh my God. Regardless of whether you watch the film subbed or dubbed the music is astounding and compliments the film to a degree I haven't seen since I watched Interstellar. Gales of Song was an amazing introduction to Belle and A Million Miles Away had me in tears. As soon as I finished watching this I purchased the soundtrack, what more needs to be said.

Overall this was one of the best purchases I've made ever and I don't regret it.
