Seventeen-year-old Aderyn ("Ryn") only cares about two things: her family, and her family's graveyard. And right now, both are in dire straits. Since the death of their parents, Ryn and her siblings have been scraping together a meager existence as gravediggers in the remote Welsh village of Colbren, which sits at the foot of a harsh and deadly mountain range that was once home to fae creatures known as the Otherfolk. The problem with being a gravedigger in Colbren, though, is that the dead don't always stay dead.
The risen corpses are known as "bone houses," and legend says that they're the result of a decades-old curse. Ryn has always been quick to deal with this inconvenience whenever they wander too close to her graveyard, but when Ellis, an apprentice mapmaker, arrives in town, the bone houses attack with renewed purpose. What is it about Ellis that draws them near? And more importantly, how can they stop them for good?
Together, Ellis and Ryn embark on a quest that will bring them deep into the heart of the mountains, where they will have to face both the curse and long-hidden truths about themselves. Equal parts classic horror novel and original fairy-tale, The Bone Houses will have you spellbound from the very first page.

"A dark, mesmerizing fairytale reminiscent of the Grimm Brothers, the Brontes, and Neil Gaiman in turn. The Bone Houses is a haunting and hypnotic novel that I drank deeply and savored. Emily Lloyd-Jones is an author who should be on everyone's radar."--Mackenzi Lee, NYT bestselling author of The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue
"The Bone Houses is the adventure of a gravedigger and a mapmaker, the story of the place where fable and rumor intersect with real-life danger and quest. Mysterious, earthy, utterly magical."--Anna Bright, One More Page Books
* "...both exciting and imaginative. Inspired by Welsh mythology, this stand-alone novel is both a classic quest saga and a page-turning horror story....A required purchase for collections serving young adults, this fine novel will especially appeal to those who enjoy fantasy with more than a touch of terror."--VOYA (starred review)
* "With ghostly prose... filled with breathless moments and occasional humor... this melancholic horror novel digs its way into the heart."--Booklist (starred review)
"...a new and magical journey, filled with the best parts of a fairy tale. Monsters, curses, love--both slow-burn and familial--beautiful descriptions of an eerie mythical Welsh setting, and a streak of humor make this stand-alone novel a must-read."--SLJ
"The Bone Houses is a dark and beautiful book, full of magic, as quiet as death and as powerful as love. Lloyd-Jones gives us a beautiful setting full of vibrant characters that's resonant with gorgeously eerie mythology, plus my absolute favorite literary goat. I loved this book."--Kate Howard, author of An Unkindness of Magicians
"The Bone Houses is an atmospheric and enthralling tale about life after death that mixes thoughtful characterization with whimsy, horror, and a dash of magic. Emily Lloyd-Jones instantly transports you to a northern Wales of old where the dead rise and legends may turn out to be histories. It pulled me -- and every bone I possess -- in from the start and refused to loosen its hold. It's a book best consumed with the lights on and a hand to hold. You'll definitely need them!"--Kalie Young, Barns & Noble at the Grove, LA
"[A] gorgeously eerie, lushly written fairytale..."--Book Riot
"[Emily] Lloyd-Jones (The Hearts We Sold) creates an evocative world of magic...and plays with the conventions of fairy tales and horror.... The story serves as a meditation on the complicated relationship between the living and the dead, combining fear, humor and enchantment in equal measure..."--Publishers Weekly
"A deliciously monstrous novel, full of the magic of ancient Wales. Reminiscent of Juliet Marillier and Marion Zimmer Bradley. Expect the unexpected in this funny, scary, mysterious, and ultimately unputdownable story!"--Dawn Kurtagich, author of Teeth in the Mist
"Centered around a truly epic journey, with a satisfying ending and slow-burn love story complicated by the walking dead, The Bone Houses is a horror-drenched fairytale. Emily Lloyd-Jones spins wit, longing, and loss into something just as magical as the creatures that haunt the night in Ryn and Ellis's world, and the result is a careful, beautiful examination on the impression love leaves behind."--Sarah Henning, author of Sea Witch and Sea Witch Rising
"Emily Lloyd-Jones has crafted a world of myth and magic, legend and lore, fantasy and fairy tale that has a quality of timelessness about it....readers who enjoy fantasy, adventure, horror, and/or folklore will certainly enjoy this novel with its engaging characters and unusual premise."--SLC
"I immediately fell into the world Emily Lloyd-Jones created, and then I barely came up for air! This is the most original, mythical-magical, undead story I have ever read. I mean, there's a dead goat -- and you're gonna fall in love with her. The feisty, axe-swinging gravedigger's daughter found a place in my heart, too. The imagination and wit astound me. I am a lifelong reader of Lloyd-Jones' books. What's next?"--Alena Deerwater, Gallery Bookshop
"Readers...who prefer their fairy tales touched with darkness, will find satisfaction here."--BCCB
"This Welsh-inspired story is haunting and compelling...A stand-alone dark fantasy that readers will want to sink their teeth into..."--Kirkus Reviews
"Throw excellent world-building, action-packed prose, and incredible representation for chronic pain into a cauldron, and you'll get The Bone Houses, a masterclass on the epic journey archetype with plenty of surprises in store."--Sami Thomason, Square Books

Was delivered on time

In time far past there was a gravedigger and her siblings whose parents had perished. She dug the graves of the dead in a small village fenced by iron to keep in the zombie like dead people called Bone Houses in the forest. Enter Ellis, a map maker who was charting a map to a village, who is set upon by a bone house and together, Ryn and Ellis try to solve the mystery of why they are escaping the forest.
I am a scaredy cat at heart and this was spooky so am glad I didn't read at night!! The characters Ryn and Ellis were what made this book for me! They were just so cute and adorable! It was like they fit together so well because of how they are, how their lives have been shaped and the fact they don't really fit into a box.
The writing was so good, loved the Welsh folklore coupled with the witty bits, the gorey bits and the lesson learned is that real life people can be far worse than the not living!

The plot was tremendous; it was simple and yet well-developed. It didn't over-egg anything or make it more complicated than it needed to be. I love that the plot and the book just focused on two characters; Ryn and Ellis, because it meant we got to know both of them so much more and see how their characters and relationship develop. I love the concept of this book and think the author did a brilliant job of executing it; were some of the twists a little bit predictable? Yes, but that never lessened my enjoyment of the book and I think honestly it added to it. When Ryn realised who the bone house was that showed her the way - oh my heart almost cracked in two. The same for Ellis realising who the last bone house was - oh just destroy me.
I loved the characters and I loved their relationship. I'm not a romance fan so if I say I enjoy a couple I must really love them - it was a friends-to-lovers-slow-burn-so-good development that just hooked me in.
I would recommend this book in a heartbeat!

It was not what I was expecting! I particularly enjoyed Ryn's character - she was strong and relatable. The fact that she is a grave-digger, a very male dominated industry, was refreshing to read.
I also like the fact that Ellis, the map-maker and companion on this journey, has a chronic illness. I think there's not enough representation of disability/chronic illness is literature.
My favourite character definitely had to be Bone Goat 🐐
Absolutely give this a go!
4.5/5

Firstly, as someone who lived in Wales for a few years, I felt immediately connected to the setting. It was so enjoyable to have a novel set in Wales and take on so much of the beautiful mythology of the country. I actually read this book on my entire train journey back to the valleys!
The characters were deeply enjoyable, Ryn is a killer main character and I loved the journey she went on with Ellis. The way his story unravels is wonderful and I enjoyed the twists. Also loved Ryn's siblings and the sweet goat. Coolest animal companion.
The writing is incredibly pretty; there were so many beautifully structured sentences. While I was too enamoured at the time, I intend to go back and highlight passages that I loved as I was reading. Not only was the writing enjoyable, but the pace was spot-on. Again, I devoured this book in an entire session. The touches of horror and the winding way the fairy-tale was spun also made this such an enjoyable read.
Overall, I whole-heartedly recommend this book! It's incredible unique and branches into lore that so few stories have.
