por fin ,tenemos una pelicula con el audio castellano bien sincronizado, una imagen muy buena para el montón de años que tiene, imagen limpia sin defectos para una de las mejores pelis de Gene Hackman, en mi opinión infravalorada, muy recomendable

Dejando aparte que la película le guste a cada cual, o no, lo mejor de esta edición es la mejora de sonido con respecto a la anterior de Warner, y sobre todo que se puede apreciar a pantalla completa. La anterior venía adpatada y recortada a pantallas cuadradas. ¡Y tirada de precio!

Revisited this unjustly obscure thriller especially after Hugh Grant's amazing performance in 'A Very English Scandal', which a supposedly top Amazon reviewer described as Grant's 1st dramatic role. This film was made 22 years earlier!
Grant plays a young surgeon in an A&E department of a New York hospital who discovers that patients are being experimented on by persons unknown, and sets about to trace other possible victims and in doing so alerts powerful forces that will oppose him and try to bring him down.
Grant does a very fair job as the bemused idealist, young, handsome, talented and with a bright future ahead of him who hits up against Gene Hackman's establishment figure complete with 'enforcers' to protect his agenda. Saying more would give away too much of the plot but this could so easily have been made into a horror film as the subject matter is very dark.
Thankfully Michael Apted has crafted an excellent thriller and drew some remarkably strong cameos from many of the cast including 'patients' suffering from the atrocities inflicted on them.

Shots of New York were beautifully handled with the big old 20th century buildings becoming stars of the landscape. As is usual Toronto is a mecca for film makers and was used in the shooting of some scenes.
That might explain the presence of the great Canadian director David Cronenberg in a non-speaking role late in the film. Remarkably odd!
A couple of solid performances from both Sarah Jessica Parker and Paul Guilfoyle as hospital staff helped the plot, and both went on to star in successful tv series.
Hackman is Hackman---- when you've reached his standing you don't have to do much to add gravitas to the production.

It looked to me that Hugh enjoyed his dramatic role, which I can't fault, and it's no wonder that 20 years later he was screaming enough is enough, please give me something serious to play in------ he's had a long wait and his portrayal of Jeremy Thorpe confirms his self belief.

Not the best Hackman movie I've seen and he plays a relatively minor role here, but the film is still entertaining and it makes a change to see Hugh Grant in a more serious role as a hospital surgeon instead of him playing his usual bumbling lightweight characters or period drama rogue or gallant. If you like films like 'Coma' and 'The Film' you will like this movie too. Grant plays the part of a hospital surgeon who can't make out why a patient of his, with unusual unexplained symptoms, dies on him after uttering some strange clues as to why he has a cut on his back and then he disappears. He starts to ask too many questions of his colleagues and superiors and in doing so 'rattles too many cages internally' that he is set up for a crime he didn't commit to oust him from his post and ruin his medical career to throw him off the scent. Only he doesn't give up; he is more determined than ever to find out what is going on. Eventually, he pieces together the clues and finds out that lots of homeless vagrants and other social misfits are being experimented on like rats to help further neurological research that will enable paraplegics to walk again. Only what they are doing is highly unethical and illegal and his determination to get to the bottom of the intrigue nearly gets him killed.

I bought this film because I AM a fan of Gene Hackman and NOT a Hugh Grant fan.
Well let's face it he always plays rather foppish,wet, slightly effeminate roles which I have always assumed is because...well to put it kindly, it matched his personality.
Having thoroughly enjoyed this dark and almost menacing drama, I now wouldn't mind seeing him again, playing something else that stretches his obvious acting ability and reveals other aspects of his hitherto unseen skills. Sadly he seems doomed to repeat his impersonation of the drippy Englishman he has come to be seen as by the majority of film goers, doomed not because of his lack of ability but of the dangers of type casting and of less than imaginative directors.
Definitely the best film I've seen him in. Watch it and judge for yourself.

I once said to my old village doctor, that I had a laymans distrust of surgeons, and he replied that it was not only laymen who distrusted surgeons!!!!!
