Biografía del autor

Tom Holland is an award-winning historian of the ancient world, a translator of Greek classical texts, and a documentary writer. He is the author of six other books, including Rubicon, recipient of the Hessell-Tiltman Prize for History and shortlisted for the Samuel Johnson Prize, and Persian Fire, winner of the Anglo-Hellenic League's Runciman Award. He contributes regularly to the Guardian, the Times of London, the Wall Street Journal, and the New York Times. He lives in London.

Mark Meadows is an actor and audiobook narrator. He can be heard on the radio broadcasts of Lost Souls and The Worst Journey in the World, both first aired for BBC Radio. On television, he has appeared as Reverend Wallace in EastEnders. He also has extensive credits as a composer and arranger.

I'm an agnostic fond of occasionally deriding Christianity, and who loved Christopher Hitchens' invectives against organized religion. This book, however, has revolutionized my consideration of Christianity's influence, and given me a lot to process.

One of the central themes in this book is that our value system in the West (incl. humanism) -- such as individual human rights and respect for the poor -- stems from Jesus' shocking message and his followers' subsequent attempt to square how/why the omnipotent Hebrew God, in the form of Jesus, suffered the death of a low criminal. It traces these threads and more throughout history with elegant prose, from people like Paul the Apostle to Paul McCartney. Reading this book really changes your perspective on the origins of Western society and our world-view (however secular and atheistic), and gives plenty of food for thought regarding what, if anything, today underpins our concepts of right and wrong.

Highly recommended for anti-theists and theists, secularists and believers, alike.

O livro é bom, porque deixa claro que o Cristianismo teve um impacto sem igual no mundo. Nossa moralidade sexual, compaixão e direitos naturais são heranças cristãs. O problema do livro é que o autor nem sequer tenta separar suas avaliações de sua visão de mundo progressista. Critica a condenação de Paulo às relações homossexuais como hipócrita, ataca Donald Trump com base em alegações progressistas e exalta as militâncias de esquerda americanas. O livro não perderia nada sem isso. Pelo contrário, a avaliação teria sido bem mais imparcial e séria sem as opiniões políticas do autor.

This book is awesome, but don't buy it from Amazon as an audiobook. The 5th CD, stops every minute and goes crazy skipping. There are absolutely no scratches, it was just burned incorrectly. Sadly, but the time I go through that CD in my car, it was past the time I could return the product and buy a different format.
