Please, please ignore the really inexplicable packaging - this is not remotely Exorcist like and the tagline 'Evil Chose Her' is just wildly off the mark. There are many fine films covering demonic possession (and many awful ones!) but this is not the subject matter here.

Actually it would be very easy to argue that this doesn't really qualify as a horror - it's more of a supernatural drama/psychological thriller hybrid thingumajig. It's also rather good.

We're not reinventing the wheel here, the film doesn't cover wholly new ground but rather mixes a few tropes from differing genres together very effectively. Even so, its probably a three star film but is elevated due to a simply fantastic performance from Jen Murray in the titular role, a massive challenge well met I feel. I also enjoyed Carice Van Houten's performance but, to be fair, Murray towers over this.

It's well paced, sombrely but effectively filmed and has a few interesting twists and turns but if I revisit it, and I likley will do so, it will be to enjoy the performances

Dublin psychiatrist Carice van Houten interviews highly disturbed teenager Jenn Murray, who’s accused of attacking an infant while babysitting. Set in a hostile pious community pitched midway between Father Ted’s Craggy Island and The Wicker Man’s Summerisle, this is the kind of deeply creepy story that quite rightly beggars belief. The performances are compelling, the climate as inhospitable as the locals, the plot components inevitably outlandish. We’re in the realm of the dead here and, as Stephen King noted, sometimes they come back. There’s evil at work, to be sure, but none of it is the girl’s doing.

Being a bit of a cheapskate I bought this dvd mainly because it was cheap! Keeping that and the quality of previous cheapo horror dvds in mind I wasn't expecting too much. As a few other reviewers have noted it does take a while to get going, but there's a good reason for that. The story unfolds within an island community, an attack on a baby by a young babysitter and the resulting investigation by a psychiatrist from the mainland. The director tries to build a sense of unease in the viewer by placing them in the shoes of the psychiatrist and observing the strange behaviour of the islanders from her point of view. It's a slow-burner for sure but a good way of keeping you guessing and the plot twists were well disguised. Jenn Murray was excellent as Dorothy (Is she crazy? Is she evil? Is she posessed?) and for me bumped this from a 3-star to a 4-star film. The supporting cast are worth praising too, being just weird enough to be convincing as an insular, secretive bunch untrusting of incomers.
A decent film and worth sticking with for less than 3 quid!

A female psychiatrist who has recently lost her son goes to an Irish island to investigate a case of child abuse by a young babysitter called Dorothy.This is a great supernatural film.Dorothy seems to have multiple personalities which control her,but has strange events begin to occur she begins to realise that Dorothy is as much a victim herself,and that the past will not remain hidden. Good story,very well cast,highly recommended.
