I quite enjoyed this story of Enid Blyton's life. I previously read a biography and yes there was a lot of stuff left out. Of course it's hard to do justice to a life in a limited time on dvd. Helena Bonham Carter did a fantastic job as Enid. One thing I would say is that if you are a fan of her books, which I am, this might put you off her slightly. She wasn't really a very nice person.
IMHO a great performance by Helena Bonham-Carter as EB, and I thought that Matthew Macfadyen as her first husband was also excellent. It is a real eye-opener. I found myself in sympathy with EB's first husband and children, and understood why Imogen might be so dissatisfied wth her mother that she didn't want to be accompanied to school by her. I found myself condemning the character of EB portrayed here and not sympathising with her over the accusation of using ghost-writers even when I didn't actually believe it. And yet, as the film makes clear, she had a great talent and could make any part of life grist for her creative mill. I can recommend the film, but it's no Enid Blyton tale for children.
Watched most of this Film on TV a while back, and really wanted to watch it again so when I couldn't get it in the shops near me, decided to see could I get it on amazon and to my delight discovered I could and at a great price. Came well packaged and in time specified. This is an excellent movie based on one of the greatest kid authours of all time, I used to love reading her books as a child and will encourage mine to read them too. Also this film brought to my attention that it was Enid Bylton who came up with the character Noddy and that it was this character she kept close to her heart which after watching this film you will understand what I mean, I love the character Noddy and my child does too, so this made me want to watch this film again and understand the story line better. Even though this film is based on the life of Enid and portrays her love and passion for writing kids novels, it also shows she loved her story telling and her dream like world more than her own kids and showed them little or no affection, however I believe this was her coping mechanism for dealing with the outside world since her childhood and give her that edge for writing her brilliant novels which are still loved and sold today all over the world. Would recommend this film as it based on a true story, is a brilliantly directed film and because it gives you a deeper insight, and appreciation of who wrote the books you once read as a child I will be definatly adding this to my DVD collection and watching it again, its just one of those great films you want to watch again and again.
Well if you ever read an Enid Blyton book as a child and enjoyed her work, this will give you a deeper insight into her personal life. I watched the film and was shocked at what a nasty person she was. I decided to do a bit of research into her and found that the theme of the film was correct. She was not a nice person, and absolute narcissist and very unkind to her ex-husband and at least one daughter. It is a disturbing analysis of such a famed author.
As mentioned in my review of Barbara Stoney's Enid Blyton biography, I thought this film was a little OTT and protrayed Blyton rather harshly, ableit she was driven and I wouild suggest unkind to her first husband Hugh I believe.
I must admit I did find the film entertaining and Helen really played up the evil Blyton character well. Blyton's husband Hugh was quite good as well and made me laugh when he was playing his tunes on his gramaphone. Them thur was some big hits back in da day "Run Rabbit run rabbit run run run" lol
