This is a handsomely produced series, charting the fortunes (and lack of them) of a Native American people and a
family of white settlers and their descendants seeking a new life over six decades covering some major events in
the history of The Old West. Some contrived coincidences in the ongoing storyline can be forgiven in the guise of
artistic licence and the episodes otherwise hold up well in their characterisations, the action sequences and the splendid photography of the various settings. Rewarding for Western fans prepared to accept a somewhat
bland depiction of the tribal warfare that was well documented for its ferocity in resisting the incursion of white
settlers and those duty bound to protect them.

When I first watched this mini-series I was not impressed and put it down to nothing more than a typical Spielberg version of historical events that ended up as being a nice story and nothing more. However since then I have watched it twice more with many years in-between and realise that the history is so subtle as to almost pass you by unless you are knowledgeable about the time frame in which it is set. The history is so well hidden at times to be almost invisible but I assure you it is there and makes this, as a result, in my eyes a cut above Spielberg's usual offerings of history. I am just about to watch it for the fourth time, and I will enjoy every single minute of it and no doubt will spot something else which was apparent before.
