This excellent film set in Kansas City in 1934 was directed by Robert Altman. I only wish that I'd discovered it sooner. The storyline is fairly straightforward: a small-time crook is caught trying to steal from a crime boss who then takes his revenge. The crook's wife kidnaps a laudanum-addicted socialite in a bid to force her highly influential husband to use his power and get the heat taken off her beloved crook. The plot holds the film together well, but it's the look and feel of the film, the atmosphere and the music that really impressed me. Kansas City must have been quite a fun place in the 1930s. Robert Altman brought in real jazz musicians, including Ron Carter and Joshua Redman, to help recreate the atmosphere of those bygone days in the 'Paris of the Plains'. It worked a treat. This is a film that I'll be watching again from time to time. Highly recommended.
