A fun 1930s romance/comedy. Ahead of it's characters are children rather than adults, on the whole you didn't get many films back then with child protagonists. Youth culture itself didn't really take off until the 1950s/60s and you can see that reflected in the story which is about money and love, things most boys don't think much about. In terms of acting I'd say the Dad gives the best performance and comes across as full of patience, wisdom and understanding. The film is very funny and there's lots of great lines. It's an old film and some of the dialogue does have that super fast sped up quality which is slightly jarring to a modern audience. Overall though a very fun, sweet and heartfelt movie. Judy Garland also sings. The dvd is presented in it's theatrical release aspect ratio of 4:3, the cinematography is nice and the sound was clear and audible. In terms of camera movement it's fairly static, there's not a lot of crane shots or dollies or anything but that suits this type of film well I think. Quite a lot of the film is shot in interiors but with some outdoor filming too. The film has a small cast and the story is easy to follow. It also belongs to a time where the woman's place is in the home and there was dialogue like, "you kissed me last night by force" "well it's good that way too."
The Andy Hardy Phenomenom of the 1930's with Mickey Rooney as the Lead are FANTASTIC MOVIES.
I have FOND Memories of watching them in the 1980's and I remember LOVING this one with Judy Garland and Lana Turner and Ann Rutherford.
Judy Garland is FABULOUS in this as Betsy Booth so Sweet and Innocent. And she is THRILLED for One Night Only to be the Center of Attraction at the Chritsmas dance.
Lana Turner and Ann Rutherford play the Snooty Girls (with their noses in the air).
They don't make Movies like this anymore (Sadly). I and my Sisters have ALWAYS LOVED the double act of Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney their Movies ALWAYS make us SMILE.
This Andy Hardy Movie is FANTASTIC. A FEEL GOOD FACTOR and a reminder of how GOOD Movies use to be.
This a most enjoyable film and perfect for a wet Sunday afternoon's viewing. All the Andy Hardy films and the ensemble cast present a slice of Mid-west Americana and the values people would wish to aspire to in the years when these films were made, and over quite a time span.We see Mickey Rooney at a young age in 'Judge Hardy's Children' and as an adult man in the last film in the series 'Andy Hardy Comes Home'.The joy that is presented in these films, and also sometimes sadness, plus issues dealing with growing up, all leave a message to all of us.It is a pity that Warner Bros.Studios or the Turner Company have not released all these films on dvd or as a box set or collection for us to buy. I believe there were fourteen films in total that were made.
I confess that I am a great fan of the very verstile Mr Rooney. This film, like others in the series, is full of home spun values, but dont let that put you off. Rooney is his usual enthusiastic self and the plot is full of the usual misunderstanding and angst, but all turns out alright in the end - Mickey doesnt get Judy Garland in this one though If you want to feel better than you started, watch Love finds Andy Hardy. Better still watch Summer Holiday (not the Cliff version)
This is a great reminder of the age that produced innocent fun - also a reminder of just how far we have departed from decency over the years. That said, Mickey Rooney did go on to have no less than eight wives and sadly ended his days, aged 93 , amid bitter family squabbles. At least he demonstrated that he wasn't Gay!!
