The Paper is set mostly in a newspaper building in 1994. Thirty-eight years later (2022) I hope things are more under control. This film is frantic, driven mainly by Michael Keaton who is constantly shouting people down or making ridiculous promises he has no time to fulfil. Not for a moment do you think he should keep his job, and that goes for the many characters who buzz around him, none of whom seem to be doing anything serious. What, for instance, would you do with someone who without permission spends 600 dollars of company money on a new chair? Nothing apparently. Marisa Tomei, Keaton's wife, spends almost the whole film heavily pregnant, bickering with him over his lateness, when we know she used to work at his paper, well aware that journalists cannot be blessed with punctuality. Sentiment is catered for by Robert Duvall who serves two helpings, but the fim is mostly done for laughs. Luckily, unlike one reviewer, I received a good print in widescreen. You might have to use the subtitles (beautifully printed by the way) because the dialogue is so fast and often overlapping. So much is going on that you can't be bored. The editing is very slick and the set is excellent. So, a mixed bag bur probably worth a shot. Come to think of it, the climax at the end of the film is alone worth a copper or two. Are American newspapers still run this way or were they ever?
An early Ron Howard Film with an interesting Cast about a life in the day of a New York Newspaper. The problem is the Screenplay. It's under-developed and scoots about from one story-line & character to the next in an unfulfilling way. Keaton is quite good though mis-cast, Duvall is - as always - excellent, Close is - well - just Glenn Close really, but there's some lovely supporting performances amongst the cast. It doesn't work but it's a valiant effort. If you see it on telly and you've got nothing to do, give it a go. Otherwise, save or divert your pennies elsewhere.
This is a review of the DVD not the film. The film itself gets FOUR STARS.
The DVD gets ONE STAR as this release lacks anamorphic widescreen meaning you have to zoom in to watch it in its intended aspect ratio on a widescreen TV. Doing so highlights the poor quality picture quality which is nothing more than marginally better than old VHS.
A brilliant film. A must for anyone who is sceptical about the media and how it works. There is some ripe language in it, but always funny. MIcahel Keaton is a genius. Thank you for the prompt delivery and the new copy.
