I am a lover of history and this book caught my eye and I was not disappointed to read on my Kindle. It is an absolute treasure to read not only about the persons themselves but about them as monarchs starting with Henry the second coming to the throne after his mother's civil war with her cousin then Henry's sons Richard the Lionheart and John (Magna Carta) Henry the third, Edward Ist (hammer of the scots) Edward the second and his misrule (another civil war) Edward the third from his youth to his death and his grandson the tyrant Richard the second. All beautifully fleshed out and included with all the other players in history at the time Simon de Montfort, Saladin, Eleanor of Aquitaine, Eleanor of Catile and Isabella of France. Not forgetting Thomas Becket and Robert Bruce.
Fascinating to read all this history and cannot wait for the follow-up book to complete the dynasty up to Richard the third.
Henry Ford once said 'history is bunk' what does he know. Just keep building cars me old mate!!!

Este libro nos ofrece una visión de Inglaterra bajo la monarquía de los Plantagenet, que se extiende desde 1154 hasta 1485 con el advenimiento de Enrique VII, el primer rey Tudor. Sin embargo, el autor, Dan Jones, decide acabar su relato en 1399. Tal vez esta sea una decisión acertada habida cuenta de la longitud que el libro adquiere hasta la deposición de Ricardo II, último hecho narrado por el autor. Este no nos ofrece en ningún momento las fuentes para apoyar los asertos formulados a lo largo de su obra. Por ejemplo, califica a William Wallace, el héroe escocés, de ladrón y bandido, circunstancia que yo ignoraba por completo. Asimismo se refiere a Iberia como " tierra azotada por enfermedades" e incluso llega a aludir al rey" Pedro de España" en pleno siglo XIV. Todas estas inexactitudes, junto con la excesiva enumeración de condes, duques, obispos, caballeros, lugares... hacen que el libro se resienta en exceso.
Por otro lado, en mi opinión el capítulo dedicado a Eduardo III resulta demasiado triunfalista y poco neutral. El autor no puede evitar su predilección por este rey, y bien que lo demuestra. Lo considera el más grande de los Plantagenet y magnifica sus éxitos en extremo. Cita sus victorias en la Guerra de los Cien Años, describiéndolas con detenimiento, pero a pesar de ello, sus derrotas, son un poco pasadas por alto, puesto que Eduardo III perdió todo lo que había conquistado.
Unicamente recomendable para los muy interesados en el tema.

A easy-to-read and fresh approach to retelling history. Sometimes it's hard to keep track of who is who in a book full of Margarets and Henrys, but of course you cannot attribute this to the author, but to the facts themselves. The genealogical tables and maps are very helpful.

Sometimes the author implicitly assumes that the audience is British and already have some familiarity with some of the stories, which was not my case. To keep track of where something is happening, it helps to have a map of England and France at hand. This is a story told from the English side, with some biases in the language about chivalric and heroic feats (not necessarily a bad thing but something to keep in mind).

This presentation is aimed at the general audience (no suprise as Dan Brown appears on BCC history shows) and presents someone with enough detail to get a full understanding of the political developments between 1120 and 1399. More abreviated presentations in history books always had the problem that events or people appeared from nowhere and thus the whole narrative was hard to follow, here you realy become familiar with the confusing host of actors in this period.

This said, the work probably has its weaknesses to a more advanced reader. Very little time is spend on judging sources, taking different vantage points or pointing out the relevance of certain aspects. As an example, while the life of Simon de Monfort is related in quite a bit of detail, the relevance of the man today is omitted. Similarly the circumstances of living in the period are not in focus. But it is a great starting point to better understand further reading on such details.

Dan Jones weaves an excellent history of the dramatic lives of the Plantagenet kings.
Names that are vaguely familiar are brought to life in vivid detail.
The narrative reveals how events shaped the history of much of the modern world today, particularly in the system of law that we enjoy in western culture.
The old saying that fact is stranger than fiction, is certainly true in this entertaining and face-paced story.
Looking at this period from our modern time, the kings and their consorts were cruel, capricious and haughty.
Yet their deeds and way of living are graphically retold in this book.
Highly recommended, even if you have little interest in history.

Dan Jones has a nice writing style and the book is a good primer for the English monarchs during the Middle Ages. However, Mr. Jones has based his narrative on mainly secondary sources. This is not a scholarly work, nor does Jones claim it as such. I studied and taught medieval history at university and, while I would not cite Jones' work in an academic paper, it was a pleasant read as a narrative history.

This book is great popular history: solid research combined with an excellent narrative style. I found it hard to put down. The same writer wrote The Wars of the Roses, which gives an excellent overview of how the House of Tudor finally emerged as the successor of the Plantagenet dynasty. Highly recommended, both books!
