Visually it looks great, the CGI is pretty good and not too heavy and the disastrous moments of destruction are very cinematic and do a good job of giving you a sense of chaos, panic and doom as the film climaxes, making it very easy to imagine just how awful it must have been for those trying to flee their fate.
This is great as a slightly camp sword-and-sandal style disaster movie which is suitably silly in places and gets an extra star for not glossing things over with a Hollywood ending. And if you're just here for a slice of John Snow whilst waiting for the next GoT season to start then obviously there's plenty of him to be had here too so you will watch it anyway.
I wanted to see how a big budget movie depicted the event, which is impressive, but also realised that the requirements of mainstream popular cinema would entail sitting through a ludicrous fictional soap opera plot.
It moves at a cracking pace, coming in at just 95 minutes, and is action packed, but it borrows every trope, or cliché in the book, from Gladiator to Braveheart, via Robin Hood. The lovers are good looking, but insipid, and the half dozen baddies are all formulaic, without distinction.
The single good performance comes from Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje who completely steals the show. I accept that he is cast as the woke saint who can do no wrong but he does everything asked of him and more and he is the only cast member with both a physical and emotional presence, exuding star quality.
I'll give them this: they at least had the honesty to follow it through to its inevitable conclusion, in that no-one gets out of here alive.
This movie was filmed in 3D and not doctored from 2D. The special effects are spectacular.Plenty of action from Spartans fighting and volcanic activity. The story line is not so brilliant, but the action keeps you engaged.
Not awful - can't imagine I will ever watch it again though tbh.
I visited Pompeii earlier this year - as you look from the main square up to Mount Vesuvius it really is quite scary to think about what it must have been like when the top blew off that.
Not as scary as some of the acting in this - but scary.
