5,0 de 5 estrellas Dan does it again!

An excellent overview of the Middle Ages across the world. It allows the reader to choose areas, events, people and/or time periods for further, deeper exploration. I always enjoy Dan Jones’ writing style because it is engaging and interesting (not to mention sometimes slightly cheeky) as well as informative. I’ve read all of Dan’s books, and this is another winner in my opinion.

Dan Jones is one of my favourite historians and I loved the way he walks the reader through this fascinating time in history, pausing along the way to drink in all the details, beautiful and gory alike. The way he writes brings the events, place and people to life in full 4K. Loved every minute of it. And enjoyed the audiobook too, because I am obviously some sort of historical but hysterical maniac.

4,0 de 5 estrellas Excellent "big" history of a thousand years
Revisado en los Estados Unidos 🇺🇸 el 15 de abril de 2023

“Powers and Thrones” is an overview of 1000 years of, essentially, European history covering the medieval period from beginning to end; and if there’s an author that can pull that off, it’s Dan Jones. As always, he has written a very readable history, and, in this case, it’s a “big” history as it would need to be to cover 1000 years.

Part I, Imperium (410-750), begins by reviewing the four key civilizations that came out of the ancient period; Romans, Barbarians, Byzantines, and Arabs and how they kicked off the early medieval period. Part II discusses four groups that defined the medieval period itself; the Franks, knights, and crusaders, given the importance of Crusades during this time. Part III examines four additional key elements that impacted the medieval period; the Mongols, merchants, scholars, and builders and how they helped define additional aspects of the period.

Part IV looks at the end of the medieval period as it transitioned into the modern era. This part reviews the survivors (primarily of the black plague), “renewers” (essentially the Renaissance), the navigators (who discovered the world for Europe), and Protestants. Jones makes the argument that the Renaissance stars, the navigators who opened up the world, and the protestant movement, that ended Catholic dominance of Europe are what ended the medieval period and moved us into the modern world.

Like I mentioned earlier, if anyone can pull of a “big” history of a thousand years, and make sense of it at a high level, it’s Dan Jones. And that’s what this is, a “big” history; something you rarely see. He pulls together the significant threads that define the period and interweaves the story into a cohesive picture that explains how the ancient world transitioned into the medieval and how the medieval transitioned into the modern. It doesn’t go into detail, which should be no surprise given the book’s scope, but it tells a good history.

4,0 de 5 estrellas An excellent historical tour marred only by a few contemporary references
Revisado en el Reino Unido 🇬🇧 el 11 de abril de 2023

Any book which covers such a lengthy period is bound to be a lightening tour, but Dan Jones conducts it with aplomb and authority. I studied modern history for my degree, a period which start where Jones finishes, so I appreciated this book as it filled in some patches in my historical knowledge. And by the standards of many history books, it's a page turner with the grand narrative sweep of a Gibbon or a Churchill.

One thing I found irritating were partisan footnotes on a few pages regarding the EU and Brexit and a few other contemporary and controversial issues. Jones' sympathies on Brexit are well known. I don't think a book on medieval history is a place to allude to these controversies. The connections are tenuous to say the least and contrary arguments could be made. And why risk alienating or annoying half your readership.

Nevertheless, an excellent and informative book well worth the investment of time.

This was a magnificent journey through the Middle Ages.

The structure for following the timeline was brilliant. Breaking it down into segments about the regions, the ethnic groups, and the trades made it an enjoyable read. The author’s weaving the threads together maintained the overall structure of the era. It was a pleasure. It provided a new enlightenment for the history of the Middle Ages.

If you read one book about the Middle Ages, this should be the one!

4,0 de 5 estrellas Good examination of a period with limited written sources

Dan Jones has done an admirable job of describing the rise and fall of the various powers over the immense time period of the Middle Ages. The length of the time covered in one treatise is necessitated, in my view, by the limited written reliable records available from "the dark ages". It is true that he
re-emphasizes events and summarizes the chapters, but I think this is necessary to show the great contrast with more recent history that has firm dates and description of events.
Jones doesn't make it explicit in his opinions, but if there is one theme that helps to understand the whole of the Middle Ages, it is the yearning to be free from death, destruction, and robbery. To me this explains much: the vast construction of castles, moats and fortifications, the construction of great churches that they believed God would honor with protection, the begging of people from the far flung outposts for protection, which is one of the reasons for the crusades, the formation of ascetic monk lifestyle, which I believe protected the community from theft - there was nothing for marauders to steal.
When you're finished with the book, the inescapable conclusion is that we have struggled to be free and have mostly succeeded. IF you're interested in the Middle Ages, I can definitely recommend this lengthy book.

5,0 de 5 estrellas Epic and Relevant, The Foundations of the Modern World
Revisado en los Estados Unidos 🇺🇸 el 23 de enero de 2022

Pandemics, mass migrations, advancing technology and communications. 2022? Nope, it's the Middle Ages.

Almost exactly 20 years ago, I was reading a reprint of Joseph Dahmus' classic, A History of the Middle Ages (1968). Jones has provided us with a much needed new overview of this critical era of history. Laying the foundation with the fall of the western Roman Empire, and ending with the dawn of the Renaissance, he covers a wide swath of history. His narrative style makes this thick book a lucid and fast read. It's a course on the Middle Ages under one cover.

It's also a study everyone should undertake. This era may seem distant and irrelevant, but the Middle Ages set the foundations for the modern world, and connect us to the ancient one. We see their problems, are often the same as ours. In our arrogance, we think we can't learn from our ancestors. Jones proves this is a fallacy in showing what the people of those times lived through.

As Jones indicates, any one of the places, people, or events he covers can be expanded out into even more detail. Nonetheless, he has created an important, one volume study. For more, see some of his other books such as The Templars. Also, Lost to the West (Brownsworth) on the eastern Roman Empire; Barbarians to Angels (Wells) on the "fall" of western Rome; God's Battalions (Stark) on the Crusades; How the West Won, and The Victory of Reason (both by Stark) on the cultural and intellectual movements of the Middle Ages; and God's Philosophers (Hannam) on the roots of modern science in medieval times.
