I have two daughters aged 12 and 15 and they both enjoyed this a lot.
My wife and I are not too proud to enjoy a Disney cartoon. For myself, I love Mulan for its humour, Tangled for its quirky Romance and Moana for its hilarity and zanyness. Frozen is fun too.
Raya passed an evening but just didn't seem to stand out in any way. No songs and, though humorous in places, not particularly funny. It's also guilty, I think, of lacking freshness. Instead of coming up with anything new it rehashes old ideas. The triplets from Brave are there in the guise of a criminal baby's three friends, for example, and various other Disney side characters seem present in one form or another.
It's an odd film in many ways; sort of Matrix meets Mad Max meets Monkey (if you remember that) run through the Disney machine. And that's all good, I like something a bit odd and different.
The main problem for me, I think, was the ridiculously niaive underlying message that ran through the film and triumphed at the end. The message is basically, trust people (no matter how unworthy they are of that trust or how much they've previously abused your trust) and you'll bring out the best in them and the world will be a better place. I'm no misanthrope but that's a message I can't stomach. Unfortunately, there simply are some terrible people in the world. And trusting them doesn't amount to wisdom. Quite the reverse in fact.
Chamberlain trusted Hitler and that made the world a much worse place.
The message was so pervasive and ridiculous that I zoned out of the movie a few times. Not something that often happens to me.
So all in all a well made, slightly weird film with some humour, but nothing particularly new, and a ridiculous core message that you really shouldn't try to implement in the real world.

Raya slips up.

For many years now Disney and/or Pixar have been producing films with leading heroines. After the two Frozen movies, Moana, Mulan, Inside Out and others comes Raya and the Last Dragon. This would be fine except that the heroines are all street wise, full in your face and decidedly lacking in charm. In the latest, even the dragon is a girl, twee and regrettably lacking the personality of the dragons in the 'How to train' films. The screen play was written by eight people and yet it feels as though it was made up on a day to day basis......'OK, she's landed up like this, what do we do next?' The lighter characters, a busy armadillo , a young lad who sells shrimps and a tiresome baby who grunts are just not funny. There is very little action. Some wonderfully nasty cats give you hope but they are underused. As in lots of films these days, the plot is too often played out in semi-darkness, though the 'drawing' and animation are fine. A disappointment. Where was the energy and pizzazz of Beauty and the Beast or the delight of Tangled?

To be fair, I'm an adult so that isn't aimed at my age group but after falling in love with frozen, I gave this a try.
I was bored to tears willing it to end. It felt like a bad computer game. Find the crystal. Next level. The dragon character drove me crazy. So annoying.
Hated it. Not one I will ever watch again.

So wasn't sure what to expect but felt like a wanted a nostalgic Sunday, carefree not too much overthinking chilled out time ,the days of watching Disney and cartoons. This was far better than expected am no expert but the visual effects are great not full of cheesy songs that get stuck in your head like frozen so you can just enjoy the Tale. It's a great story about trust so adults and children can relate to the moral of the story.
The characters are very strong women so probably good appeal to girls very empowering about time eh who needs a Prince these days. Really enjoyed it
