I've been a huge fan of the Mitch Rapp series from the start. I will admit though that this is probably the first one that wasn't quite as unputdownable as in the past. I've been trying to figure out why this is the case. I'm starting to wonder whether Kyle Mills (the author who has taken up the baton since Vince Flynn's passing) is making Mitch a caricature of his former self. It feels like he's slowly being dehumanised which is a shame. I hope he reflects on this and ensures that he recaptured what made Mitch Rapp such a gripping character. As of now he's no longer as compelling a hero as Tom Wood's Victor, Greg Hurwitz's Evan Smoak or Mark Dawson's John Milton. It's not too late..

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and ,frankly, feel that Kyle Mills is doing an excellent job keeping Mitch Rapp alive and active. There is a sense that Mitch has possibly become a little more desensitized, even brutal when the situation requires, but considering his occupation, this change in his nature would not be surprising.

The story is pacey with strong characters and an interesting story line, which I am sure will appeal to Mitch Rapp fans and also to any readers who have yet to make his acquaintance.

As I said in a previous review, Vince Flynn is a hard act to follow, but I Kyle Mills certainly gets my support.

No hesitation in recommending this book and awarding five stars.

This is without a doubt the worst book in the series. It is even worse than the poor attempt of the film.

The action and plot have gone from gritty and believable to laughable and pure fantasy.
The character development is now non existant and the characters themselves are just predictable recycled tropes from every crap andy mcnab book.

The langauge and use of pros is no longer gripping but predictable and jars as if the book was written by a teenage action fan.

Very dissapointed, cannot recommend.

I love Mitch Rapp but the character and flow of the books is becoming lost over time. In particular here.

I nearly gave up on this at the half way point. Normally I would read a Rapp novel in a couple of days, almost non-stop. It took me two weeks to reach halfway - and this is a pretty thin book.

The first half is just a drag attempting to establish a motivation for the characters dragged out of previous novels with no good reason.

More than anything this seems to be Mills' attempt to write a Clancy novel but the realistic character development was lacking in detail and credibility. It reminded me of The Bear & the Dragon in many respects - except for the writing quality.

Overall a feeble plot - floundered around for the first half of the book.

Sorry Kyle - bring back Mark Beamon

I seem to only read when I travelling away from home and when I do I love the single hero 'genre' books which are out there from an abundance of authors. Mitch is most likely one of my favourites in that having read all the books in the series it is easy to find yourself sitting for hours immersing yourself in the characters and story. Red War is I think up to the normal standard and makes for easy easy reading. The story seemed to be trying to stay current but was ultimately unbelievable (aren't all fiction thrillers).
Ultimately a good read and I will continue to follow this series
