Cat and Mouse Game at Cruising Height
Revisado en el Reino Unido 🇬🇧 el 16 de mayo de 2017
Seldom have I enjoyed a film as much as this one. The story is straight foreward enough: A politician is to be assassinated. A young woman can arrange for him to be in the right place at the right time without causing suspicion. A young man has the job to convince her to do so. What makes the film work so well is the way it's set up. Lisa (Rachel McAdams) boards her delayed flight and finds she is seated beside the attractive young businessman Jackson (Cillian Murphy) with whom she has already had a drink in the airport bar. And just when you're ready for a romance to blossom between the two, he reveals himself as the devious criminal he really is and makes his demands, threatening her father will die if she doesn't do as she is told. What unfolds is a deadly game of cat and mouse between two desperate people, who look to all around them like a young couple having a minor quibble.
The performances of the two leads are outstanding. Rachel McAdams finds just the right balance between fear and distress on the one hand and courage and intelligence on the other to make her character believable and relatable. Cillian Murphy is superb as the villain of the piece. So charming is he throughout that one can't help but root for him.
The supporting cast is equally good. The minor characters are highly entertaining and add a welcome touch of quirky comedy. There is the serious 11 year old girl who manages to freak out Murphy's character, the nice old lady who travels in combat boots, the cougar who tries a little too hard to catch the eye of the attractive young villain who has to keep up appearances but can't afford to take his eyes off his hostage for one moment. Most fun of all is the complaining lady in the hotel who opens and closes the film, and who is played, apparently, by a marketing executive. Well, I hope somebody gave her more work in front of the camera, because she is pure comedic gold! She makes you walk away from this film with a chuckle. And that's never a bad thing.
Full marks also for director Wes Craven who wasn't afraid to tighten the plot and be left with a rather shorter than average film of well under 90 minutes. Possibly this has something to do with the apparently all important 13 PG rating which may also have been a reason that scenes of gore and violence were either never filmed or ended up on the floor in the cutting room. The sparing use of blood and violence is more than made up for by moments of supreme suspense, expertly created by the master of horror Mr. Craven is.
The DVD includes several extra features, among them a short making of featurette, a gag reel and a feature length commentary. Well worth owning, especially if you're a fan of either of the two leads.

Edge of your seat

A conscientious hotel Manager is taking a flight home and meets a charming stranger in the terminal. They part, but when boarding she finds the stranger is seated next to her. While initially pleased with the situation, she quickly finds out the whole situation has been planned and she is now in the middle of a terrorist plot, with her father's life threatened if she doesn't assist the man.
I was very impressed with this film - great acting, excellent pacing and direction, a believable story and the initially trapped female lead turning the tables in the end. And when you think the film might end, it takes off again, ramping up the action another notch.
Well made and great entertainment value.

After attending the funeral of her grandmother in Dallas, Hotel manager Lisa is waiting for a flight to Miami.
Due to the bad weather and consequent flight delays, she meets in the airport bar Jackson Rippner, who is also in the waiting list.
They sit together on the plane, and Jackson reveals that he wants Lisa to change the room in her hotel of an important American politician to facilitate a terrorist attempt against him.
Otherwise, Lisa's father will be killed by a hit man.
Lisa has to decide what to do with the menacing man at her side....
After the crassness of Scream 3 and Cursed, it's nice to see Craven do a little thriller movie which really sets the heart thumping during the first two acts. Murphy steals the show from everyone as the protagonist who wants Lisa to make a simple phone call.
His name gives a lot away to who he is and what he is capable of, but it just gets laughed off during their first encounter. Comic relief is provided by the girl from Glee, and the urgency provided by the ever reliable Cox and the man waiting outside for him.
There are little macgufins though in the film that are featured (pens for sure) that make you think 'hmmm, i;m sure they will be used later' and sure enough they do.
and this is where the film slightly falters, Craven goes back to his Scream/horror roots, and turns Rippner into an all slashing, all maniacal corridor stalker.
He even has a killer as trait with his voice distorted thanks to a pen in the windpipe, and a weird gait.
it sends the movie a little bonkers, but thanks to a very solid first two acts, the film manages to hold up. Mcadams is fine in the film, but she does nothing memorable.
This film is all about Murphy, and proves he is one of the best young British actors in the business.

An excellent thriller - and no sex, nudity or bad language!
Revisado en el Reino Unido 🇬🇧 el 3 de mayo de 2008
The fact that this movie is classified as suitable for 12 years olds meant that the whole family could sit and watch it, which we did, and we all thoroughly enjoyed it.
However, don't let this fool you into thinking that this film is not for adults. It's a gripping movie right up to the end. I guess the rating is due to the fact that the movie does not contain sex, nudity or bad language - a blessing in my view and proof that it is possible to make an action/thriller/suspense movie without the need to introduce these elements (although the movie does contain some violence).
Other reviewers here have described the plot so it seems pointless to repeat these details but I highly recommend this movie. A thriller in which the suspense gradually increases to a dramatic climax with the two main characters, a seemingly friendly but ultimately evil villain and an unfortunate victim trapped and apparently at his mercy, both excellently portrayed by Cillian Murphy and Rachel McAdams.

ONE OF THE BEST THRILLERS I'VE EVER SEEN!
Revisado en el Reino Unido 🇬🇧 el 25 de febrero de 2012
RED EYE is a terrifying, action-packed thriller directed by Was Craven (SCREAM 1-4, THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT, THE HILLS HAVE EYES) and starring Rachel Mccadams and Cillian Murphy. It was just brilliant! The acting was so good I couldn't believe it! Rachel Mccadams was extremely convincing as the main character and Cillian Murphy was just as convincing as the main villain. The storyline was very original, clever and intense and was never boring. The last twenty minutes was full of awesome action but it didn't just rely on the action, gore or terror, which was why I liked it so much. I highly recommend RED EYE if you want to watch a good thriller! OUTSTANDING!
