This might be seen today as a classic mansplaining film. Garbo's character should be in complete control of events, but her two male suitors - an affluent ex and a current rector - feel entitled to dictate how she should behave.
I was left with the feeling that she would probably regret having had the relationship with the ex and that she was well off out of the relationship with the rector. Alas, the film does not really convey that. The impression is given that she would welcome a relationship with the rector, but that the scandal of her previous relationship with the ex rules that out.
Apparently it played well at the time of its release, but I suspect that current audiences would see it as an object of ridicule, as I do.
As was often the case, the film is worth watching because Greta Garbo is in it, not that the film is good in other respects. And such a tactic worked for many of her films at MGM until Irving Thalberg took special charge of her films, and her career began to reach a much higher status than had previously been the case as her films became balanced with script, music, other Actors and special direction for Miss Garbo that had been lacking in many of her early talking pictures. The camera work by William Daniels was always exceptional in all of the films he acted as cameraman, and that included most of her films. Garbo's silent films are another story.
