A heart rending, wonderful story, of hardship, friendship and tragedy on the Streets
Can't believe its not re-released and digitally mastered, especially as there are two heavyweight actors in it, Matt Dillon, and Danny Glover....
If you do watch it, you won;t regret it, as the script , setting, and acting are all first class.

At times gut-wrenching, this movie is a surprisingly heartwarming tale with an unusual premise: the relationship between two homeless men in New York City.

Matt Dillon turns in an amazing performance as a schizophrenic who's been forced to navigate life on the streets of one of the world's largest cities. Danny Glover does his usual solid job playing a disabled Vietnam veteran who's found himself left behind by the economic disparity which all-too-often haunts our nation's military men and women. Also featured, is Ving Rhames during the beginning of his rise to fame, portraying a heartless and cruel street thug who specifically targets his fellow homeless.

With so many of today's homeless seemingly comprised of young people who've chosen life on the streets, The Saint Of Fort Washington is a touching reminder of those who landed there through no fault of their own. Although the story centers on the two protagonists, we see glimpses into the lives of those they come into contact with.

The film's only major weakness is the "saint" component. Although Matthew's seemingly miraculous gift of laying on of hands is the entire reason for the movie's name, it seems forced and almost trivial set against the film's larger tale of down-and-out life in an uncaring world. I get a definite impression that the story was originally larger, and Matthew's gift was probably detailed much better, but in the end cut, it seems shoehorned into a story that has no room for it. You're left wondering if it was a genuine miracle, or simply the magic of touch gifted to a people often seen as untouchable. Mostly, you'll just wonder why it was incorporated into the movie at all, as it would've been a tighter story without it.

Often praised for its despairingly realistic portrayal of life on the streets, The Saint Of Fort Washington is an engaging, beautiful story of a very ugly subject. I highly recommend!

A Fine Film Showcasing The Sad Lives Of The Homeless

37This was a film that touched my heart. Here we have a veteran homeless man showing a naïve kid the ropes as he descends into the abyss of homelessness and disconnection from society due to his schizophrenia, an illness that can destroy one's life. Matthew (Played Wonderfully By Dillon) is a young man with a kind heart who is forced onto the streets when the building he lives in is torn down, throwing his life out of balance. Unable to go to his Mother for help, he is forced to fend for himself in a cold and hard world. At Fort Washington shelter, Matthew befriends Jerry, a fellow homeless Vietnam Veteran. There they encounter terrors they would never imagine as a bully named Little Leroy terrorizes and intimidates all and everyone in the shelter (With The Assistance Of Some Of The Guards). Leroy eventually murders and robs Matthew of his money.

I was saddened at what the characters went through. I just finished seeing a movie (Suspect) that dealt with homelessness in a tertiary way. This film went into more details of the day to day lives of two men affected by the plight of homelessness. From people who ignored them to those who called city services to tow their homes away to those who assaulted them and harmed them in more ways we could imagine. I never realized how giving a few bucks to a homeless man could be the difference in eating and/or going hungry.

I don't think police force the homeless to go to shelters. To me that sounds illegal. And even if they were in the shelters I can't imagine they would be forced to stay within the shelters. They are shelters, not prisons! Yet that's what led to Matthew's murder. I was saddened because he was buried in a common plot in Staten Island and his Mother and high-school friends would never know what happened to him. That's so sad.

I recommend this movie. I can't believe it's only been reviewed on Amazon 36 times. I'm the 37th person to review it. Kudos to Danny Glover and Matthew Dillon. They had great chemistry together and played their roles remarkably. If you like this film I think you might also like 3 AM. Nevertheless, I wish they would make more films like this showing the lives of the homeless.
