This is not a jumping on point to Marvel movies, as pre knowledge of some other ones will help.
Shang-Chi lives in America. He has a past he thought he left behind. He enjoys karaoke with his best friend [Awkwafina] and he just lives. He has martial arts movie posters on his bedroom wall.
But then his past catches up with him and he is forced to fight. Head across the world. Discover his past. And his destiny...
Like the Black Panther film, this does a good job of showing this world outside of America. It's very stylish in representing it's culture and has some great art direction. It does manage to get a lot of exposition in without being overwhelmed by it, which is not something all comic book movies that have to do that manage.
Awkwafina is quite entertaining playing a character who could easily be very annoying. The first action set piece is terrific, original gripping and really well done.
And all in all, it does succeed by being a little bit different to what has come before.
There is an entertaining surprise as well. Which succeeds in doing some good continuity.
Minor quibbles: it's ten minutes too long. My attention did wander during some of the quieter moments and scenes of people talking. One flashback is a bit extraneous. The character of his sister ends up being rather underused.
And outside of the first set piece I mentioned, they forgot to put any other bits of jeopardy in here. Of the other two set pieces, the first doesn't carry any because you don't believe people are going to get hurt. And the final big battle set piece is yet another of these. We've seen them all many times now, and even though this has some different elements, it's still too same old same old.
But all in all an entertaining watch, and those who like their martial arts movies, or who like to pretend to do such things when watching fight scenes, will be entertained.
Do as ever keep watching to the very end of the closing credits for a couple of extra scenes.
The dvd has no extras.
It goes straight into the main menu when loaded with no traillers or ads.
As ever it's not got a 3d option because only two people who don't understand the meaning of the phrase review the product actually care about such things.
Language and subtitle options are:
Languages: English, French, Spanish, English audio described.
Subtitles: English, Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, Spanish, Swedish, French, Dutch.
Although it doesn't mention French or Dutch on the box, I checked the disc and both are on the menus.

The film is a great view on the 4k format.
It tells of how thousands of years ago how , Xu Wenwu (Tony Chiu-Wai Leung) discovers the mystical ten-rings hich give him immortality and great powers, which he uses to gain power down the years rather than do good.
In relatively modern times he hears of a secret and sacred place he knew little of 'Ta-Lo' where he was to fall in love with Fala Chen as Ying L they would have two children who early on would be trained in martial-arts, a tough regime for the young Xu Shang-Chi / Shaun:(Simu Lui)
In modern day, living in San Franciso calling himself Shaun he soon finds his skills useful.
In time he will search for his estranged sister Meng'er Zhang as Xu Xialing who now runs a competitive martial-arts club.
Events will bring the two face to face again with their father who seeks to find his wife who had been killed years before, this brings them to 'Ta-Lo' where Shang Chi and his sister help defend Ta-Lo in direct conflict with their father........their aim to stop Wenwu's misguided quest.
This is a very enjoyable action-packed movie which will leave you wanting more.

A film based on Shang-Chi entered development in 2001, but work did not begin in earnest until December 2018 when Callaham was hired. Cretton joined in March 2019, with the project fast-tracked as Marvel's first film with an Asian lead. The film's title and primary cast were announced that July, revealing the film's connection to the Ten Rings organization, which previously appeared throughout the MCU, and its leader Wenwu. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is the first Marvel Studios film with an Asian director and a predominantly Asian cast. Filming began in Sydney in February 2020 but was put on hold in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Production resumed in August before completing in October, with additional shooting occurring in San Francisco.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings premiered in Los Angeles on August 16, 2021, and was released in the United States on September 3, as part of Phase Four of the MCU. The film broke several box office records upon release, including records for a film released during the pandemic, and has grossed over $431 million worldwide, making it the eighth-highest-grossing film of 2021. It garnered positive reviews from critics, many of whom praised the choreography of the action sequences, exploration and representation of Asian culture, and the performances from the cast, particularly those of Liu and Leung.
following on from Black Widow in the juggernaut of the MCU. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the ten rings is the mythical entry that is wrapped up in a father-son relationship drama, it has its high points but still feels very early stages of another long drawn out MCU saga with its post-credit scene teases what's to come, which what Marvel does so well but I lacked the interest in the general of the main story as it does go all cookie-cutter, even with a certain character back, who you would have thought by now was long gone.

I got it in the Amazon black Friday sale...look if you get enjoyment from the film I'm glad.
But for me total letdown his best friend who joins him on his adventure is not needed
Only really one martial art fight and that's on the bus scene... choreography is not very good.
And the ending is all over the place
Thought it done a disservice to the character to be honest
Such a shame really as I did have hopes about it and loads of people were telling me it was good till I saw it then they changed their minds.
