Yes, it doesn't take itself too seriously (and that's some of its charm),
yes, it has its ups and downs,
yes, you may say it is more fiction science than science fiction,
and yes, I STILL LOVE to watch it, with all it's well done special effects, villains, story lines, and original ideas.
I won't elaborate on the content, as I believe potential buyers have already seen most of it.
I'll just try to complete the missing data that doesn't seem to appear neither on the Product Details on Amazon nor on the boxset or accompanied booklet and nor in the previous reviews I've read here.
I,personally, find it highly interesting, especially on heavy loaded movie magic productions, to have behind the scenes information given in the form of featurettes and commentaries.
This boxset has some good ones, but I've removed one star to differentiate it from later seasons where it got better and better, culminating in season 4,where all episodes have commentaries (with subtitles !!!).
In this boxset one or two episodes at most on each disc have commentaries, and they are generally very good and well presented. None of them are subtitled.
These are their details:
Disc 1
Episodes 1&2 Rising
Martin Wood (Director) & Joe Flanigan (Sheppard)
Disc 2
Episode 6 Childhood's End
Martin Gero (Writer), Rachel Luttrell (Teila) & Rainbow Sun Francks (Lt. Ford)
With some long silences and not so well prepared, this is the least memorable commentary, but still has it's good moments.
Disc 3
Episodes 10+11 (The Storm + The Eye 2-parter)
Martin Wood, Martin Gero & David Hewlett (Dr. McKay)
Episode 12 - The Defiant One
Peter De-Luise (Writer & Director) & Dan Shea (Actor & Stunt coordinator)
Disc 4
Episode 13 Hot Zone
Martin Gero (Writer), Rachel Luttrell, Rainbow Sun Francks & Paul McGillion (Dr. Becket)
Disc 5
Episode 18 The Gift
Peter De-Luise (Director) & Gary Jones (The Actor that plays the SGC "Chevron Guy" - Walter Harriman)
A very joyful and wacky at times commentary with the best part IMHO is the cool story about Rainbow Sun Francks' audition (at around minute 30 of the episode).
Episodes 19+20 (The Siege 1+2)
Martin Wood, Martin Gero & David Hewlett
Overall highly recommended, but with shipping costs accumulating when ordering separate seasons consider buying the complete season 1-5 boxset.

This is the first season of that storyline and the action moves further out into the universe, with most of it taking place in a different galaxy. The members of the expedition team are rather more on their own than those of the original series, so the dynamics of the storylines are slightly different. There is still a vicious alien race that are the bad guys, and other humans that the Stargate teams are trying to protect.
There is slightly more tension between the various people than in SG1 as the team members are composed of fewer military personel and more scientists. The episodes often have a slightly "grittier" feel to them, and less of the comedy that was a feature of SG1. The extras on the disks are also very useful in showing how the episodes were created.
If I was being very critical about the box set, I think that it's rather odd that they don't include an episode list; something that I would have thought to be essential. However, I suppose that I can create my own and put it in the box for reference.
Suitable for a present for many people (I would have loved to get this as a present) or if you are an SF fan.

The show isn't the issue, the video quality of the DVD's ... not so great. this serious could really do with a digital clean up. i don't know if it' been remastered as the set I got was i think an original set but the quality of the video show's it age. i think if it's cleaned up it will be AMAZING! but as yet the quality isn't the best and that let's this box set down.
But the series is brilliant, it's fun and quirky and for me personally it's not as heavy as SG-1, it feels lighter and a little more laid back. the graphic's and special effects as brilliant and my favourite scene will always be the rising of Atlantis :)

Pros
long running show
High quality
Cons
Dvd quality
