I just finished watching the third season DVD set, and while Stargate Atlantis is still my favorite Sci-Fi show, I was rather disapointed.

Here's why.

(Warning! Spoilers below!)

First, story arc failure. I was expecting a huge advancement in the story arc concerning the Wraith, but it just didn't happen. Sure, they appear in a few good episodes, but it didn't seem like the story with respect to them in particular moved at all.

Second, killing off Dr. Beckett. I really liked him. Maybe I'm dating myself a bit here, but he was kind of like Scotty and McCoy rolled together but with a cooler head. This very lovable character will be missed.

Third, rehashing the replicators. With an entirely new galaxy as our backdrop for this series, why do the replicator thing all over again? It was original enough on Stargate SG-1, but I was amazed that Atlantis started a story arc with replicators too. Are they going creatively bankrupt already?

Fourth, rehashing old sci-fi standbys, like the "weird alien thingy or disease that causes loyal comrades to start killing each other". Did the original Star Trek do this in the episode "The Naked Time" and wasn't it done again by Star Trek Next Generation as the second or third episode in that series?

Fifth, bringing back a whole ship full of "ancients" just to kill them all off by the end of the two part episode. So, the "ancients" have gone from being a great and mysterious race of humanoids from the past to an expediant plot device. We can create them and destroy them at will just to get and episode or two. Couldn't an "ancient" or two have been spared and used as secondary characters? Wouldn't that have been interesting? They could have helped explore the rest of the city. Their ship could have been recovered. There's so much that could have been done with them that wasn't.

Sixth, lack of character development. Tayla could be a full-fledged warrior princess with a rich heritage and tons of wisdom, but she seems little more than a pretty (to say the least) face with a great body who never uses contractions (reminds me of Barbara Eden in I Dream of Jeanie) and tilts her head a lot. And then there's Ronan the Monotone Macho man who does nothing for me but must appeal to a certain demographic so he's still there.

Still, the season ended with a special effects spectacular and a tightly written script that showed just what the Atlantis team is capable of. And, of course there's the wealth of special features and commentaries that you get as part of the standard package with Stargate franchise DVD sets, and that greatly adds to the value of the set.

I haven't seen any of season four. Here's hoping.

Packaging was brand new--(but see UPDATE Below)sealed in cellophane, and played well(*except see below-Update). These are regular DVD's - not Blue Ray (fortunately as I don't have a Blue-Ray player). I watch these on my large laptop computer and there's no blurry picture or mislabelling. Subtitles appear on all discs in English. I wish there was an option to turn those off though, sometimes they are distracting. Other than that - GREAT TV SERIES - and I really believe that studios in this country need a heads Up on what they should be thinking about - a show that has run for 14 years including spin off's is a great show- not one you should cancel - just bring in some new writers if your old ones can't cut it on new ideas.

UPDATE: July 20, 2013-- I should have played all the disks before making the above comment. I purchased Season 3 and Season 4 at a reduced price/markdown from $21.99 to $9.99 each-- thinking it was a bargain. Season 3 played fine through all 25 episodes- However, in playing the disks from Season 4- disc's 3 and 4 of the Season 4 set have problems and 5 episodes on those discs would not play at all. On examining the 4th disc-I found signs of some chemical along the edges that would not rub off, the #3 disc didn't have that chemical but the disc stopped several times and I had to remove and re-insert it a couple of times to get it to work. -- I'd be wary of any further "bargains" in dvd's.

I read quite a few of the other reviews (but not all, so I apologize if this has been brought up already). I love the show (see my other reviews) and truly thought that Season 3 was great fun. Really, the only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 is that the the DVD cases and the inserts were disappointing. Maybe it was just an error for my discs alone. I know that they are not knock offs because I bought directly from Amazon, but the cases from Seasons 1 & 2 were much better quality and the inserts had some of the episode info on the inside of the covers. This time around, it's just printed on the outside with the usual action shots, and no info on the inside. Just white, blank paper.

I don't mean to be picky, -- the show is the best, most enjoyable, scifi out there and actually, this was one of only two complaints. Maybe they were saving money for making the SG-1 movies, who knows (lol).

My other complaint was that every single commentary was from background people (they are the ones who make it all happen, but I personally thought that prior seasons' commentaries were more entertaining). I don't remember hearing one commentary from any of the actors. I enjoy hearing what happened on the set during filming from the actors' POV some of the time.

My fav episodes were "The Tao of Rodney", and "Sunday" (even though it was so sad). These complaints are small and definitely won't keep me from watching this season over, and over again. I still recommend that you buy it and know that you will enjoy it.

Stargate Atlantis was a great series. It only lasted half as long as Stargate SG1, and didn’t have the wonderful cast of Stargate SG1, but I enjoyed the series as much as the original Stargate series. I only watched a few episodes of Stargate Universe. The original Stargate series was fun and witty. Stargate Atlantis continued with the fun and wit, but Stargate Universe was dark and dumb, with an unlikeable cast.

Stargate SG1 is a great example of taking a mediocre movie, the source material, and turning it into an outstanding franchise with the longest running sci-fi series in history, although Supernatural is now the longest running fantasy series in history.

When I’m not watching episodic storytelling I’m reading, everything from nonfiction to westerns, but at least half of my time is spent reading sci-fi and fantasy.

Sci-fi and fantasy authors I like include Douglas Adams, Isaac Asimov, Paolo Bacigalupi, Ray Bradbury, Orson Scott Card, Arthur C. Clarke, Earnest Cline, Suzanne Collins, Abe Evergreen, Diana Gabaldon, William R. Forstchen, Joe Haldeman, Robert A. Heinlein, Frank Herbert, Hugh Howey, George Martin, Larry Niven, Andre Norton, George Orwell, Patrick Rothfuss, Brandon Sanderson, John Scalzi, John Steakley, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Andy Weir.

This is the third series of "Atlantis". There is always a danger of a spin-off series failing to develop its own character separate from that of the original; but this has not been the case here.

Although they still have links back to Earth and there are a few crossover plot items, the storylines are still that bit different from SG-1. Partly this is due to the dynamics between the various characters for which the writers came up with some really interesting and quirky twists; the loss of key personnel from the main cast list is an example.

The writers were producing some really good material for this season; there were a number of moral conflict plot lines and these were directed in a way that allows the stories to develop naturally without seeming that they were trying to preach a message within a short space of time. The sets and locations were really excllent as were the special effects; although you know that it's not real, it's difficult not to get caught up in the narrative as the whole package is just so well put together.

The box set also contains some really good extra material; shots of behind the scenes, interviews with cast, writers, directors etc. All of this makes thsi a really great set to own and it's one that I will keep by the T.V.

I LIKE IT!!! I won't begin to go into a write up like other gifted individuals but this is great for a 10 year old locked in a 50 yr old man. Kirk references were funny by McKay but that's about the limit on that character. I don't like his smart [...] ways but there are some episodes where he shows a more human side. Sunday just sucked as a story but the episode was performed very well. You'll know what I mean when you get there. I won't mention how attractive I think Dr Weir is..but I guess I already did. Actors/actresses did a great job in all episodes thus far and what surprised me is they're all Canadian except for the MASH guy(sorry fella). Good job aye! Found it pretty cool that the studio is in Vancouver considering I was stationed just south of there. I'm really getting stupid in this so I'll stop. Strange that I had to deploy to the Middle East to discover this series but so glad I did...discover it I mean. Had to pace myself because I was making marathon watching the norm.

"Stargate Atlantis" ist eine grandios, toll gemachte Sci-Fi Serie und Serien Ableger von Stargate Kommando SG-1 (welche ich persönlich nie geschaut habe).

Paul McGillion's Dr. Carson Beckett ist meine Lieblingsfigur welche aber hier im laufe der 3. staffel "stirbt". Damit hat man das Ende der Serie (Staffel 5) eingeläutet - viele Fans sind der selben Meinung, denn zur Rettung holt man dann das alte Personal aus "Stargate SG-1" was aber nicht wirklich funktioniert.

Bild und Ton sind super.

Das Bonusmaterial ist unglaublich. Neben kleinen Dokus mit Schauspieler über Ihre Rollen, Making ofs die im Schnitt 10 - 20 Minuten dauern ist sehr Interessant anzusehen. Man sieht, dass die beteiligten offensichtlich sehr viel spass hatten!

Vorbildhaft sind die vielen Audio-Kommentare zu "fast" jeder Folge der Regisseuren, Produzent/Autoren, Schauspieler - und das jeweils deutsch untertitelt!!! (das schafte nicht mal Warner bei "Gigi", "Casablanca", "Ein Amerikaner in Paris). Es wird ab und zu mal etwas "spasshalber" mist erzählt, aber im grossen und ganzen erfährt man recht viel (auch über kleine Filmfehler "Goofs".

Und auch Vorbildhaft: die Staffeln erscheinen jeweils komplett. Dafür gäbe es glatt sechs Sterne

You've heard it before and I guess your gona hear it again. Things pick in this 3rd season in a big and nice way. I rarely watch TV anymore so it's DVD seasons for me. Simply put, each year it gets better and better.

I'm a Stargate fan from the word go regardless. Be it SG-1 or Atlantis, if your a fan of the gates and you want sci-fi, then this season is a no brainer. I've seen nit picking on characters, what they coulda, shoulda, have been, have done, or have said and I respect this, it's opinion. I know I could not create better, and I have never looked at a character in this series and said, " now thats a dumb move, or what an idiot, as I do for many other movies or programs. That in itself is a fairly large compliment to the shows writers.

I can't wait for the 4th season! (on dvd!!!!)
