Having recently listened to Tom Jones ‘Reload’ and ‘Praise & Blame’ which were undeniably excellent albums, I thought I would extend it to ‘Tom & Jools.’
On first impressions I am a bit underwhelmed by it. Yes, there are some nice songs on it, reasonably catchy, with typical Jools’ piano and big band backing. Tom’s voice as ever is in very good nick.
However, at no stage, with this selection of mainly rather ordinary & unexceptional songs does he need to extend himself. After a while some of the tracks tend to morph into one another? Some of course we've heard on Jools' TV show but even 'St James Infirmary' failed to lift me to a higher plain!
Many are rather short ditties; the whole album of 19 tracks is no longer than an hour, with 7 of the tracks in the two minute or so category. This is not a problem or a criticism, just a fact.
The album is decent enough on the ear, the songs and arrangements are nicely put together, as you would expect from a master like Jools, though I can’t honestly say that there was one track that made me sit up with the ‘wow’ factor? The whole album is a bit ordinary in that way - as far as I am concerned. Yes, worth a listen for sure, but not one for me, that I’ll be playing over and over. There are better albums for Tom Jones fans and probably better albums for Jools fans too?

I loved Tom Jones when he first appeared and used to perform a lot of Otis Redding & Wilson Picket hits and was every bit as good a soul singer as they were. I went off him when he started singing middle of the road stuff so I loved it when this came out & was a throw back to those early days. Unfortunately I lent it to someone about 10 years ago and never got it back. I have bought his last 3 cds & decided it was time I replaced this one. I love it just as much as I did when it was first released.

I love being sung to and felt I needed to buy some songs sung by our wonderful Welshman Tom Jones. But so many of his songs are being played and sung all the time. They have come as much a part of Welsh culture as the lovely traditional songs. Then I saw this. I chanced upon Tom singing jazz one night on the television and was impressed by his huge enjoyment. Also I knew Jools Hollands work so decided to buy this disc. What pleasure this gives me. Sheer musicality by two of the top musicians of this age. Wonderful happy making late night music which is just as enjoyable in the mornings and the afternoons! Thank you both!

Blimey Charlie! ...this starts off weird and wonderful,I didn't know what had hit me. This is clearly a case of the 2 main participants having way too much fun. The sound is BIG and bouncy,it comes over just that little bit too enthusiastic at times,but still gets **** from me. You'll enjoy it if you choose your time carefully when to play it . Tom's belting out at 100 m.p.h stuff like Life's Too Short, , It'll Be Me, St Jam Infirmary Blues, and A Mess of Blues by somebody other than Elvis or Quo.
