Interesting and touching film.

This film appealed to me, mainly because I have always been interested in, and touched, by the plight of the Native Americans since the first Europeans set foot on their soil. Historically, their story is a tale of tragic expulsion from their traditional lands and removal onto reservations, active suppression of their culture and way of life, and outright decimation of their population, culminating in 1890 with the Ghost Dance movement and the massacre at Wounded Knee. Sitting Bull was a central figure in these latter events, and this film ends with his death from an Indian police bullet on December 15, 1890.
Based on real events, the film tells the story of Caroline (Catherine?) Weldon, a painter and Indian rights activist from New York, who sets forth to the Standing Rock Reservation in order to paint Sitting Bull's portrait. She lives among the Sioux and soon gains a trusting relationship with Sitting Bull. This happens during a critical time for the Sioux. The American government attempts to implement the Dawes Act, in order to expropriate large portions of the Great Sioux Reservation for white settlement. Weldon, who is a member of the National Indian Defence Association joins in the protest against the government, and the conflict ends with Sitting Bull's death and the Wounded Knee massacre.
Woman Walks Ahead is of course not a documentary, but the central plot is based on real events. The film is beautifully shot and well executed in every department, and the acting is flawless.
The film is rather slow paced, which suits the imagery of the dry and rather desolate expanses of the Great Plains. There is not many action scenes, but the drama lies in the developing relationships between the characters set against the backdrop of political upheaval for the Sioux tribe.
The blu-ray disc contains no extra material, which is a shame, and this is the reason who I give it 4 stars and not 5.

Beautiful, sensitively filmed. But heartbreaking in how the white colonists behaved and treated the Native American people. The sheer brutality and callousness, the cruelty and pitilessness perpetrated on a people who were innocent of the treachery and the greed which, motivated the white colonists.
They did not deserve what was done to them. Only one name can be used and that is GENOCIDE.
The white population of America should hang their head in shame for what their predecessors did and in many ways still goes on today.

Based on a true story ...with some Hollywood liberties taken ... it's an interesting n enjoyable film about a young female artist and her fascination with painting native Americans...in particular Chief Sittingbull. The F word is used a couple times which was disappointing
