Avid horror movie binger & huge fan of Pans labyrinth this disappointed me slightly. With the intention of taking both his life & the lives of his children their father shoots himself & leaves his children in the woods. The scariest part is when the smallest child crawls along the worktops of the shack like a spider, a pile of berry seeds lays on the floor as this is what the children eat. A ghost-Mama takes care of them until they are found & rescued then going to live with their uncle & his girlfriend. Traumatized by the years of isolation they cannot adjust to normal life.
Mama inanely jealous won't let the children be & wants them back. Huge potential, decent story line, directed well just not scary enough for me.

I don't know what i expected when i sat down to watch this film but i know i expected something better and with a stronger storyline....this film is a dark, wishy washy gothic fairy horror flick at best....although the word 'horror' can only bear very weak attatchment to this dissapointing offering.....the premise seemed promising ....the girls found after many years apparent abandonment yet claiming an emotional bond with the mysterious and sinister 'Mama'....,who initially is an assumed imaginary 'friend' however turns out to be very real (well....in a sense i s'pose).....the girls are taken into the care of their uncle and his partner after both parents had died at the beginning of the film.....something to do with the banking crisis......father takes them to this cabin in the woods whilst in a clearly emotionally unstable state.....he's about to do away with his daughter when something does away with him instead.....so i'm thinking....whatever this 'Mama' is it's protective of the girls right?....wrong....by the end this film goes too-ing and fro-ing between....'Mama' wants to protect them....no she doesn't..almost like the director himself didn't know what to do with the ending and tossed a coin to reach a decision ....on the plus side....the acting is pretty good and believable.....just a shame that the film is not.

Mamma Mia! The Movie Soundtrack

As soon as I saw the trailer for this film I was really looking forward to seeing it. I like musicals, and am not totally overt to cheesiness, so this seemed like it would be just up my street. I asked someone to get it me for Christmas, and as soon as I opened it I put it on.

What a disappointment!

Firstly I found the characters really irritating, and didn't enjoy watching them. The main girl, although she could sing, couldn't seem to act at all. All the other actors seemed to have the opposite problem, in that they could act but couldn't seem to hold a note that well.
In parts this was particularly bad, and almost unbearably embarrasing to watch! I've noticed many reviewers saying that this is the point, they are not meant to be able to sing well. Well, if that's the case then this point is totally lost on me. It is also lost on me why Pierce Brosnan felt the need to have professional singing lesssons if it didn't really matter if he could hold a note or not....... I really feel that they would have been better to have a cast of lesser known people who could really sing, rather than a well known cast who look uncomfortable and can't sing that well.

To be honest though, the most irritating thing I found was the conclusion-in that it is bypassed all together! At times the only thing that was keeping me going was to know who her 'real' Dad was, and the way this storyline was tied up/ ignored/ replaced by the Meryl Streep storyline really cheesed me off!

There are some positives though. The scenary is amazing, and the film does provide a bit of meaningless escapism which is so important for all of us. I really wanted to like this film, but didn't. I get the feeling that it could have been done so much better than it was if the casting was more appropriate.

This is rather poor fare. It looks and sounds brilliant; very high production values. But the plot and scares leave a lot to be desired. Jessica Chastain does a pretty good job for the most part but the fake tears in her eyes, and her terror when the Mama haunts her in bed were less than convincing. This is a pretty much horror-by-numbers movie for the masses. Very pedestrian directing, jump scares (try using no sound for these maybe?) and lack of a decent coherent plot have all taken their toll on this film. I would say avoid... Instead, try Pan's Labyrinth, The Orphanage, or The Devil's Backbone. I'm taking it to the charity shop.

Point one: I don't really like musicals but I watched this with my dearly beloved because she'd heard it was good fun.

Point two: I love Abba and was a big fan way back then and I still think they were just about the best pop group of the 70's.

But this film was just plain nonsense. Of course it wasn't to be taken seriously and was supposed to be fun and light-hearted. But that is no excuse for a) there being NO plot, b) some of the worst casting I have ever come across (Pierce Brosnan?), c) just about the most awful bunch of cover versions of some of the most-beloved songs in recent history.

Sorry, but this is one of the worst cases of exploitation of the value of "star pull" that I have ever come across. I hadn't seen the stage show and won't now but why, oh why, did whoever was really responsible for this pile of rubbish not think to cast some actors and actresses who could actually sing - it's supposed to be a MUSICAL after all.

This was a travesty and an insult on many levels - to music, to film, to comedy and most of all to ABBA.

(I'll let Julie Walters off 'cos she's just a great actress but I do have to question her judgement on this one).

Unfortunately I was in hospital when this DVD arrived, and when I came home and played it , it was jumping all the time. When I checked it, it was full of scratches. Now I think it is too late to send it back to you so I am going to have to buy a DVD cleaner to try and get rid of the scratches. I have ordered lots of items from Amazon and I have never experienced anything that is so faulty. Anyway I thought I would tell you about the condition of this DVD so that it doesn't happen to someone else.

OK, first the positives. I enjoy ABBA's songs, I think Meryl Streep and Julie Walters are (usually) wonderful actresses, Meryl Streep can certainly belt out a song, I think Colin Firth and Pierce Brosnan are (usually) great, the Greek scenery was stunning and it was a feel-good, fun film. However....

The negatives. I'm not a fan of musicals so perhaps this isn't going to be a wholly objective review, and I admit I only watched it because my friends said I must see it, but overall I thought it was dire! I couldn't see what all the fuss and hype was about; EVERYONE overacted - especially Julie Walters I have to say - to the extent it was almost embarrassing to watch. The story was weakly fitted around the songs and the men didn't have any sort of singing voices at all. It was so cheesy and corny that I had to restrain myself from fast forwarding it to the end.

Great, I suppose, if you're into musicals, excruciating if you're not.

Some people have given good reviews, some people watch it more than once but this is not for me. I felt the whole production, despite some well known names, was amateurish. But we each have our own likes and dislikes. My advice is to decide for yourself.
