Eine Warnung vorweg - wer beim bloßen Gedanken an eine Story, die auf die Rückseite einer Urlaubspostkarte passt, und an Menschen, die im 5-Minuten-Takt voller Hingabe ABBA-Songs schmettern, Pickel bekommt, sollte MAMMA MIA! mit gleichnamigem Ausruf meiden. Aber all denen, die knapp zwei Stunden der blendend aufgelegten Darstellerriege neidlos beim bezahlten Mittelmeer-Urlaub zuschauen wollen, sei DER Gute-Laune-Film des Sommers 2008 ans Herz gelegt, nach dessen Ansehen sich ein beseeltes Lächeln und die tief in die Gehörgänge gegrabenen Melodien nur operativ entfernen lassen.

Natürlich macht die simple Geschichte der alleinerziehenden Donna, die sich Dank ihrer kurz vor der Vermählung stehenden Tochter Sophie mit der unerwarteten Begegnung mit ihren drei verflossenen Liebhabern konfrontiert sieht, jedem Kitschroman Ehre. Doch wie Autorin Catherine Johnson knapp zwanzig allseits bekannte ABBA-Hits im Kontext unterbringt, deren für sich allein genommen banale Texte die jeweilige Situation, in der sie präsentiert werden, perfekt umschreiben, verdient große Anerkennung. Noch größerer Verdienst gebührt letztendlich den Schauspielern, die ausnahmslos engagiert und spielfreudig ihre auf den ersten Blick ungewohnt anmutenden Rollen auszufüllen verstehen. Allen voran muss Meryl Streep erwähnt werden, die sich einen weiteren Meilenstein als wandlungsfähigste Aktrice ihrer Generation in die Vita schreiben darf. Hat man noch ihren Auftritt als eiskalte Verlegerin in DER TEUFEL TRÄGT PRADA in Erinnerung, meint man eine völlig andere Person wie entfesselt und fast mädchenhaft unter griechischem Himmel singen und tanzen zu sehen. Abgesehen vom zweifellos vorhandenen gesanglichen Talent ist es allein der Schauspielkunst der 59jährigen (sic!) zu verdanken, dass selbst slapstickhafte Nummern wie "Money, money, money", "Mamma Mia" oder "Dancing Queen" - obwohl am Rande der Lächerlichkeit entlang schrammend - glaubwürdig herüber kommen. Und wer nicht bei "Slipping through my fingers" und spätestens dem leidenschaftlich interpretierten "The winner takes it all" der Streep verfallen ist - nun ja, siehe eingangs erwähnte Steine.

Nach dieser Lobeshymne fällt es beinahe schwer, noch Aufmerksamkeit für den übrigen Cast zu wecken. Doch weder die Damen noch die Objekte ihrer Begierde müssen sich hinter Donna verstecken: das reife Frauentrio um Donna wird komplettiert durch die herrlich snobistische Christine Baranski (BOWFINGER, CHICAGO) als mannstolle Tanya und Julie Walters (KALENDER GIRLS und HARRY POTTER-Serie) als burschikose, leicht schusselige Rosie. Beide erhalten genug Raum für kleine, teils zwerchfellerschütternde Soli wie Baranski mit der frivolen Darbietung von "Does your mother know" und Walters mit dem Balzgesang von "Take a chance on me". Donnas Tochter spielt die optisch und vokal hinreißende Amanda Seyfried (GIRLS CLUB, TV-Serie VERONICA MARS), passend ergänzt durch Hardbody Dominic Cooper als Bräutigam in spe Sky.

Das Testosteron-Triumvirat wird gebildet von: Pierce Brosnan, der für seine manchmal angestrengt wirkenden Sangeskünste - meines Erachtens völlig unverdient - Tadel einstecken musste. Den weiblichen Zuschauern zur Freude darf er in mehr als einer Szene seinen mittlerweile graumelierten Brustrasen zeigen und darüber hinaus mit "S.O.S." ein ergreifendes Duett mit Meryl Streep bestreiten. Colin Firth versprüht den seit BRIDGET JONES kultivierten Charme als schüchterner, verkannter Liebhaber und ehemaliger Headbanger (hier sei ein Verweis auf die brüllkomischen Jugendfotos der Ex-Lover gestattet, die Firth und Brosnan in so garantiert noch nie gesehenem Look veralbern). Stellan Skarsgård schließlich überrascht durch ausgelassenes Spiel und sympathische Ausstrahlung, die er in seiner bisherigen, oft auf zwielichtige Typen festgelegten Rollenwahl (RONIN, der tragisch verfluchte "Stiefelriemen Bill" in FLUCH DER KARIBIK 2 & 3) selten an den Tag legen dufte.

Gleich von der ersten, luftig-leicht choreographierten Nummer "Honey, Honey" an überträgt sich die Spielfreude des gesamten Cast auf den Zuschauer und entlässt ihn nicht einmal mit Beginn des Abspanns aus dem zum Mitwippen einladenden Bann, wenn sich alle Protagonisten als ABBA-Reinkarnationen in schaurig-schönen Glitzerfummeln nochmal so richtig zum Obst machen dürfen. Auch wer es - sei es aus falsch verstandener Männlichkeit oder wegen akuter Ohrwurm-Allergie - nicht zugeben mag und ABBA nur heimlich im Keller hört, wird trotzdem nicht abstreiten können, dass Benny Andersson und Björn Ulvaeus zeitlose und universelle Pop-Juwelen gelungen sind. Und so ist es nur konsequent, diese Empfehlung für reuelos zu genießendes, herrlich seichtes Entertainment mit dem Schlusssong und dem Dank an die Komponisten zu beenden: Thank you for the music.

Set on a Greek island, the plot is told via a collection of ABBA songs. Sophie ( Amanda Seyfried ) who is about to be married discovers that any one of three men could be her father. She invites all three, Bill ( Stellan Skarsqhard ), Harry ( Colin Firth ) and Sam ( Pierce Brosman ) to the wedding without telling her mother, Donna ( Meryl Streep ), who was once the lead singer of Donna and the Dynamos. In the meantime, Donna has invited her backup singers, Rosie ( Julie Walters ) and Tanya ( Christine Baranski ).
The music of ABBA, comedy and romance what more can you ask for ? If your a die hard ABBA fan you may not like this but the genius of the soundtrack shines through. The cast appear to have put their hearts into the roles and even Mr Brosman gave his singing vocal chords a blast.

Julie Walters provides much of the comedy and is a joy to watch. Donna and the Dynamos are not a bad group, I have seen and heard worse on Top of the Pops & X Factor.

You also get Cameo appearances of Benny Andersson ( piano player ), Björn Ulvaeus ( Greek god ) and Rita Wilson ( Greek godess ). Rita Wilson is Tom Hanks wife ( the film was distributed in partnership with Tom Hanks' and Rita Wilson's Playtone and Littlestar )

It's an enjoyable film if you can forget the perfection of the ABBA originals.

Oh My Gosh, this film is brilliant ive seen it twice and im going to see if for a third time, i love it.

Its my favourite film of all time!

Its just great all i can do is sing its praises

Meryl Streep can really sing, she is such a brilliant actress and she plays her brilliant usual self! Pearce Brosnan is not the best singer but tries his best which comes across clear, Colin Firth is more eye candy, Amanda Seyfried wow shes got a brilliant voice, i had only recognised her the other day as the ditsy blonde in Mean Girls and not really heard of Amanda but she is just amazing in this and she can sing so well. Meryl, Amanda, Julie Walters & Christine Baranski just add magic to this brilliant film. Its A Must See!

In the song The Winner Takes It All it really shows off Meryls talent and having done that song in one take it shows how good she really is, also her character in this film is played remarkabley well, this film did make me cry as i felt her being sad and confused! All the actors put there own little bit into this film and it brings out a briliant piece of work and the actors and actresses should be proud for making the world so happy.

Everytime i have gone to the cinema to see it everyone in the cinema has been smiling or clapping or singing and some even dancing (!) Everyone has also clapped at the end.
This is just an amazing film!

Its so good and i love it.

I cannot wait till it comes out on DVD i will be in that queue buying it.

I suggest this film to any one who loves musicals, its more a girly film yes but it will keep ABBA songs in your head for weeks.

Brilliant Amazing WOW!

Meryl Streep Dancing Queen

Ich bin eigentlich nur in den Film rein, weil ich Meryl Streep verehre. Ich hatte einige Vorbehalte, denn a) ABBA ist zwar okay, aber trifft nicht 100%ig meinen Musikgeschmack und b) ich wusste nicht was ich von Meryl als Dancing Mama halten sollte. Ich habe davor oft gehört - warum lässt sie sich zu so etwas herab? Warum? Weil es wohl Spass gemacht hat. Meryl Streep, selbst keine 20 mehr, zeigt sich in diesem Film mit Schwung und Elan wie man es von einer Dame ihres Alters wohl nicht erwartet. Sie wirkt frischer als in den 80er-Filmen (z.B. Jenseits von Afrika) sie hat mehr Charm denn je und landet einen Lacher nach dem anderen. Die Szene "The Winner Takes It All" fand ich gesanglich mies, und dennoch zur Szene passend. Somit traf Meryl da genau den Nerv des Publikums und zauberte Gänsehaut. Zumal merkt man bei den Songs von Meryl eindeutig: die Frau hatte auch eine Gesangsausbildung! Ihre Filmtochter Sophie ist einfach süß und ein gesangliches Meisterwerk. Mit ihrer kindlichen Neugierde und Naivität ist sie absolut zum dahin schmelzen bezaubernd.
Pierce Brosnan war für mich dagegen eine große Katastrophe, aber den mag ich generell nicht, daher war diese Besetzung für mich von vornherein der böse Nebeneffekt. Gesanglich liegt er so daneben, daß man ihn sich wieder als Bond wünscht. Ganoven jagen kann er definitiv besser!
Prinzipiell ist der Film mit einer Top-Besetzung ein gelungenes Comedy-Meisterwerk. Es ist keine anspruchsvolle Handlung, aber man kann sich ja auch einfach mal was zum Lachen anschauen, einfach mal abschalten und etwas fürs Gemüt tun. Meryl ist für mich in diesem Film mal wieder der gigantische Kern. Mit einer anderen Schauspielerin in dieser Rolle wäre der Film nur halb so gut. Und die ABBA-Songs sind perfekt eingefügt - immer passend zum Thema der Szene. Teilweise dramatisch und sentimental, teilweise zum brüllen komisch und teilweise einfach nur edel. Die Kulisse der griechischen Insel lässt einen den Sommer zurück wünschen und Urlaubsträume werden wach...

I went to see this with one of my friends who really wanted to see it but didn't want to go by herself - and having read some reviews, I was prepared for it to be a bit tacky, with some dodgy singing and potentially less than great acting.

But I have to say - with pride - that I absolutely loved it! Came away singing and feeling so happy - it's been such a long time since I've left a film feeling like that. The dodgy singing made me laugh so much and I think that's part of the charm of the film, and made it seem more "real". And so what if some of the acting is a bit off when the whole cast seem to have enjoyed themselves so much and the comedic timing is so amazing?

I have to admit that I hated the first bit of it, very twee and a bit too forced, however from the arrival of the mum's friends on her island, through to the credits, I was smiling, laughing, crying and generally having an amazing time. So if you're watching it on DVD and thinking that you're going to stop, just hang on in there as I reckon that it gets so much better.

The setting was truly tremendous and made me ache to want to go there and experience it for myself - making it ideal for both summer and winter viewing! In fact, I'm planning on watching it over the Christmas period to recover from the post-Christmas blues.

I'd recommend this as a gift for people if they enjoyed the film or the musical - it's bound to be a film that they watch over and over again. It's Ferris Beullers Day Off or Dirty Dancing for adults!

My 85 year old Mother went to see this film and came back saying she felt as if she had been given a tonic. She found the film extremely entertaining - so much so, she went on about it for ages. So, I decided to go and see it - having been an avid Abba fan in my teens. It was everything I could have wished for. It was entertaining and fun, amusing and sad (at times) but all in all it made me (a) want to see it again and (b) go to Greece!!! I'm sure the Greek tourist industry will benefit from this film!
Meryl Streep has yet again proved herself as an amazing actress, along with the rest of the cast. I know everbody has been going on about Pierce Brosnan's singing but I loved the way he sang SOS - it really shows what a good actor he is. All of the older cast were excellent in their parts and I think that people who critise any of the singing are wrong. The older actors that took part in this film were amazing considering that the majority of them - if not all of them are not actually professional singers. I think they did a great job.
I have to say that the younger part of the cast were very good also, very full on though - that was the only thing that I had any reservation about. However not enough to stop me thoroughly enjoying this film and have already ordered 2 copies for presents.
