I just finished watching the third season DVD set, and while Stargate Atlantis is still my favorite Sci-Fi show, I was rather disapointed.

Here's why.

(Warning! Spoilers below!)

First, story arc failure. I was expecting a huge advancement in the story arc concerning the Wraith, but it just didn't happen. Sure, they appear in a few good episodes, but it didn't seem like the story with respect to them in particular moved at all.

Second, killing off Dr. Beckett. I really liked him. Maybe I'm dating myself a bit here, but he was kind of like Scotty and McCoy rolled together but with a cooler head. This very lovable character will be missed.

Third, rehashing the replicators. With an entirely new galaxy as our backdrop for this series, why do the replicator thing all over again? It was original enough on Stargate SG-1, but I was amazed that Atlantis started a story arc with replicators too. Are they going creatively bankrupt already?

Fourth, rehashing old sci-fi standbys, like the "weird alien thingy or disease that causes loyal comrades to start killing each other". Did the original Star Trek do this in the episode "The Naked Time" and wasn't it done again by Star Trek Next Generation as the second or third episode in that series?

Fifth, bringing back a whole ship full of "ancients" just to kill them all off by the end of the two part episode. So, the "ancients" have gone from being a great and mysterious race of humanoids from the past to an expediant plot device. We can create them and destroy them at will just to get and episode or two. Couldn't an "ancient" or two have been spared and used as secondary characters? Wouldn't that have been interesting? They could have helped explore the rest of the city. Their ship could have been recovered. There's so much that could have been done with them that wasn't.

Sixth, lack of character development. Tayla could be a full-fledged warrior princess with a rich heritage and tons of wisdom, but she seems little more than a pretty (to say the least) face with a great body who never uses contractions (reminds me of Barbara Eden in I Dream of Jeanie) and tilts her head a lot. And then there's Ronan the Monotone Macho man who does nothing for me but must appeal to a certain demographic so he's still there.

Still, the season ended with a special effects spectacular and a tightly written script that showed just what the Atlantis team is capable of. And, of course there's the wealth of special features and commentaries that you get as part of the standard package with Stargate franchise DVD sets, and that greatly adds to the value of the set.

I haven't seen any of season four. Here's hoping.

I read quite a few of the other reviews (but not all, so I apologize if this has been brought up already). I love the show (see my other reviews) and truly thought that Season 3 was great fun. Really, the only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 is that the the DVD cases and the inserts were disappointing. Maybe it was just an error for my discs alone. I know that they are not knock offs because I bought directly from Amazon, but the cases from Seasons 1 & 2 were much better quality and the inserts had some of the episode info on the inside of the covers. This time around, it's just printed on the outside with the usual action shots, and no info on the inside. Just white, blank paper.

I don't mean to be picky, -- the show is the best, most enjoyable, scifi out there and actually, this was one of only two complaints. Maybe they were saving money for making the SG-1 movies, who knows (lol).

My other complaint was that every single commentary was from background people (they are the ones who make it all happen, but I personally thought that prior seasons' commentaries were more entertaining). I don't remember hearing one commentary from any of the actors. I enjoy hearing what happened on the set during filming from the actors' POV some of the time.

My fav episodes were "The Tao of Rodney", and "Sunday" (even though it was so sad). These complaints are small and definitely won't keep me from watching this season over, and over again. I still recommend that you buy it and know that you will enjoy it.

Mais quel besoin y avait-t-il de changer à ce point le packaging de la série. Adieu les Digitray transparents superposés et l'aspect brillant des deux premières saisons. On se retrouve désormais avec un fourreau cartonné, et trois boitiers slim noir. On gagne certes à peine un peu de place sur l'étagère, mais ce coffret jure à côté des deux précédents. Moi qui est préféré ne pas prendre le coffret Bénélux pour conserver une homogénéité, ben c'est raté !

On se contentera quand même de ce qu'on a et on se fait une raison, puisque le contenu est plus intéressant que le contenant. Le retour de Richard Dean Anderson sous les traits du Général O'Neill dans un très bon épisode, le somptueux crossover entre SG-1 et Atlantis (vous devrez posséder aussi le coffret de la saison 10 de SG1 pour le découvrir, puisqu'il n'est malheureusement pas en deux parties) qui réuni cette fois tous les personnages des deux équipes et un final de saison dantesque.

Atlantis n'est qu'un fade clone de la série SG-1, dont il reprend malheureusement trop souvent les intrigues. Heureusement la saison 3 reste globalement convaincante. Et on va de surprises en surprises. Deux reproches cependant, les trop fréquents bouleversements du casting, et surtout cette édition cartonnée franchement mauvaise.

Es hat lange gedauert bis die dritte Staffel zu einem annehmbaren Preis auf dem Markt war.

Bei den Folgen ist endlich ein roter Faden deutlich zu sehen, was meiner Meinung nach in den vorgen staffeln nicht erkennbar war. Lückenfüller-Episoden sind seltener geworden.

Die Charaktere haben ihren Platz gefunden und der Erdschiffstyp (Daedalus-klasse) wird mit viel Schwung eingebaut.

Eindeutige Höhepunkte sind die ersten zwei (No manŽs land), Handlungsstrang Michael wird vorerst beendet) und letzte Folge (First Strike), die Replikatoren werden genauer betrachtet, der Staffel.

Staffel 4 spinnt den Faden weiter. Meine persönliche Lieblingsepisode findet sich in dieser Staffel: Da gibt es eine sehr actiongeladene Episode rund um John Sheppard, der ein Antikerschiff der "Auroraklasse" findet und eine sehr amüsante Konfrontation mit einer sehr attraktiven Anführerin (Larrin) ausfechtet.

Let's face it, Stargate Atlantis is going to appeal to those who already liked the show, and those curious enough to give it a look. For fans, it's a chance to see the crew once again, and they don't disappoint. It was fun seeing the old gang again. The disks contain a basic menu system, and the disk quality is pretty good, especially if you have an up-converting player. Considering the 1st two seasons came packaged together at a good price, picking up the remaining seasons, individually, also at a good price, was definitely worthwhile.

Die Dritte Staffel bleibt spannend.
Erstklassig besetzt und mit guten Drehbauchautoren ausgestattet ist SGA eine der besten SciFi Serien seit langem.
Der schrullige Dr. McKay der stehts einen Ausweg aus den ausweglosesten Situation findet, der Knallharte Alien Krieger Ronon dessen ganzer Planet zerstört und die Überlebenden seines Volkes über die ganze Galaxie verstreut wurden, aber auch alte bekannte wie Mr. Woolsie oder Samatha Carter und Dr. Lee.
Nicht zuvergessen ein längst besiegter Feind: Die Replikatioren die sich aus der Asche erheben.
Natürlich endet die dritte Staffel mit dem ersten Teil einer Doppelfolge. Was für eine Staffel!

Einziges Manko ist die Verpackung: Was soll das? eine DVD-Spindel im Buchformat? Enttäuschend.
Deshalb nur vier Sterne.
