El producto provenía de Amazón WareHouse, un producto reacondicionado pero NO revisado ya que faltaba el blueray 4K UHD y traía dos blurays normales repetidos. Parece que el anterior comprador hizo el cambiazo y lo devolvió. Mala revisión por parte del personal de Amazon que se encarga de su comprobación.

Blu-ray entspricht nicht dem hohen Niveau des Films

Die Diskussion über das richtige Bildformat zeigt immer wieder, dass viele Filmenthusiasten, vor allem die jüngeren, hiervon kaum eine Ahnung haben. Es gibt Kinogänger, die nicht einmal wissen ob sie einen Cinemascope- (1:2,35) oder Normalbildfilm (1:85) gesehen haben. Später wundern sie sich über die Balken im Fernsehen und haben kein Verständnis dafür, obwohl es genügend Abhandlungen im Internet darüber gibt. Ich habe alle Breitbild-Formate von Anfang an miterlebt (Cinemascope 1:2,55, späterer Standard 1:2,35; Cinemascope 55 = 55mm breiter Film; Vista Vision; Technirama, Todd AO = später Super-Panavision 70, Camera 65 = später Ultra-Panavison 70, MCS 70, Cinerama und Cinemiracel) und auf großen Leinwänden gesehen. Ich habe keine 70mm-Film-Präsentation verpaßt, somit auch Spartakus nicht. Er lief bei der deutschen Premiere Ende Dezember 1960 in 70mm = 1:2,20. Das Bild war sehr brilliant und durchweg scharf. Später kam für die kleineren Kinos eine Cinemascope-Fassung (1:2,35) heraus. Das hatte zur Folge, dass das Bild in der Höhe leicht kaschiert war (fiel nur Insidern auf). Auf der Blu-ray ist nach meinen Erinnerungen des Bildinhalts das richtige 1:2,20-Format enthalten. Daher erübrigt sich m.E. jede weitere Diskussion darüber.
Was mich ärgerlich macht, ist die verhältnismäßig schlechte Bildqualität auf der Blu-ray. Sie unterscheidet sich von der DVD nur unwesentlich. Auch Doppelkonturen sind mir aufgefallen, was auf eine elektronische Nachschärfung schließen läßt. Es ist mir unverständlich warum Universal ein derartiges Highlight in ihrem Filmstock (sehr viele davon hat die Filmgesellschaft m.W. nicht) so stiefmütterlich behandelt. Veröffentlichungen auf Blu-ray von Highlights anderer Filmgesellschaften aus den 50iger und Anfang 60iger-Jahren zeigen, dass man das Ausgangsmaterial so gut restaurieren und transferieren kann, dass man den Eindruck eines neuen Filmes bekommt. Im Falle von Spartakus hat man nach meinem Eindruck das neue Medium nur dazu benutzt, das alte für DVD eingerichtete Master erneut zu vermarkten = Profitoptimierung. Bei solchen Perlen im Filmstock einer Filmgesellschaft sollte nicht der Profit im Vordergrund stehen, sondern das Produkt (Pflege der Filmkultur). Bei Gladiator z.B. (von diesem Film redet in 20 Jahren möglicherweise niemand mehr, dafür Spartacus - 50th Anniversary [Blu-ray ]vielleicht aber von Spartakus) hatte man sich beeilt, die nicht 100%ig gelungene BR-Erstaugabe neu zu mastern und den Käufern anzubieten, die BR kostenlos zu tauschen. Wie wäre es wenn man das gleiche bei Spartakus tut?
Meine Wertung von 2 Punkten bezieht sich lediglich auf die Blu-ray. Der Film bekommt 5 Punkte.
Es bleibt zu hoffen, vielleicht sollte man auch beten, dass wenigstens "Ben-Hur" auf Blu-ray das Optimum an Bildqualität erfährt und im richtigen 1:2,76-Format! Der Film wurde in 70mm 1960 in diesem Bildformat gezeigt, ab 1969 wurde er dann (sozusagen normiert) nur noch in 70mm-1:2,20-Format gezeigt. Bei diesem Film ist ohnehin ärgerlich, dass die Dialoge bei den bisherigen DVD-Veröffentlichungen nur aus der Mitte kommen (auch bei der englischen Fassung) und nicht, wie seinerzeit im Kino, von der Stelle von der der Sprecher im Bild zu sehen ist. In der ersten Fernsehübertragung war das noch so zu erleben (Nachweis Videoaufzeichnung). Aber vielleicht tut sich da noch etwas.

The movie is very good. Peter Ustinov and Charles Laughton, in particular, are great. It has some excellent epic scenes and a rousing Alex North score. So why only 2 stars? The Blu-ray is...not good. How they managed to take a film that was shot in 70mm and make this piece of dross is a source of amazement. I saw the film restoration that was done several years ago. It looked amazing. This does not. Someone has gone nuts with the "noise reduction" and as a result much detail is lost. Everyone looks sort of waxy and in the big crowd scenes people become blurs. The colour is also off...everyone looks like they overdid it with self-tanning spray. A major disappointment and on film sites this is always a title that comes up as one that desperately needs a redo. If you really want to see it, pay for a download and watch it once, or wait until it is on television. Save your money. Hopefully, someday, a better Blu-ray will come along.

ADD ON: Since writing this review, word has come out that sometime later in 2015, a properly restored version of SPARTACUS will finally be released. This makes it a no brainer. Wait! The new blu has been worked on by Robert Harris, the same gentleman who was responsible for the expert film restoration in the 1990's.

Kaum zu glauben. Dieses Version von einen Klassiker (von dem in der langen Zeit Versionen in vielen Sprachen gemacht wurde) beinhaltet am UHD Disk lediglich English und Deutsch als Sprachen und Untertiteln - gar nichts mehr).

Ja, im Amazon DE steht “Untertitel: Deutsch, Englisch” aber ich glaubte dass auch wenn diese begrenzte Auswahl am Umschlag vorhanden ist, wie oft zuvor, die Realität etwas anders wäre.

Seht enttäuscht von der Faulheit des deutschen Distributors - die meisten machen es richtig, dieses überhaupt nicht.

beware this blu ray version is not the restored one . is probably the 1st version from dvd upscaled . the PQ quality is dvd of the worst kind ! Search for the remastered 4k version . The 1st side looks the same like this but at the back side mentions that has extra minutes and that is 4k remastered . it's the only really HD version .

Typical lazy authoring from Universal. Their home video philosophy is clearly “let’s do the absolute minimum.”

The special features are weak. No commentary.

There are only 16 chapters for a movie that is OVER 3 HOURS LONG.

Oh. And the movie is middling at best. A perfect showcase for how arrogant Hollywood is and how little they respect their consumers.

I love this film and it was one of my first choices when deciding what to purchase for my new DVD collection. Here is a warning: the quality of the video is dismal on this version of the DVD. When reading the other reviews I had to check my version to make sure it was the right one. First of all the DVD encoding is jittery and interspersed with coding artifacts throughout the film. The quality is similar to a movie taped from TV onto a well worn VHS tape. The poor encoding is immediately noticeable when compared to my other DVD purchases like Ben Hur or Gone with the Wind. In addition, this DVD is not a two disk set. My two star rating is purely based on the reproduction quality since I still consider this one of the greatest movies ever made.

The DVD came in a different package, No HD, no digital sound very diappointed. I returned production and I'm not sure if my account was credited. After returning the item, I saw the Blue-Ray edition for less on the amazom site. So once I get my credit for the Black cover edition of "SPARTACUS", not the one pictured above, I would like to order the Blue-Ray version in HD & Digital surround sound. Thanks, Marianne Bocchichio
