Eerie, effective horror with a very original script written by the master of horror Clive Barker. Helen Lyle (Virginia Madsen) is eager to do research on her project on serial killers. Many serial killers have been caught, but the mystery of one remains unclosed. Candyman, when his name is mentioned five times in front of a mirror is supposedly meant to come to the person and slay them. Helen is determined to discover if this "myth" is real. Most recently someone is brutally murdered, but is this the responsibiltiy of Candyman or is it something else? Tense, psychological horror thriller. Tony Todd plays the evil Candyman with excellence. Just one note before I go. Whatever you do when you finish watching this film don't take the chance saying his name five times in the mirror. I know I didn't!

The Movie that produced a few sequels and a remake in the 2000's. This is the Original terrifying movie staring Virginia Madsen and Tony Todd. Great story and good acting. A must watch for horror fans and the price is right.

Die Doktorandin Helen Lyle (Virginia Madsen) und ihre Freundin Bernadette Walsh (Kasi Lemmons) schreiben an einer wissenschaftlichen Arbeit über urbane Legenden und moderne Märchen. Dabei stoßen die beiden Frauen auf die Geschichte des Candymans. Die Legende besagt, wer fünfmal seinen Namen vor einem Spiegel spricht, dem erscheint der Candyman, um den/diejenige mit einem Eisenhaken aufzuschlitzen.
Die Spur des Candyman führt Helen und ihre Freundin in das heruntergekommene Stadtviertel Cabrini Green von Chicago. Ein grausamer Massenmörder treibt dort sein Unwesen. Der Polizei fehlt jede Spur, doch für die Bewohner des Ghettos steht fest: Der Candyman ist kein Mythos, sondern er steckt hinter den grausamen Taten! Ohne zunächst an die Legende selbst zu glauben, begibt sich Helen an einen der Schauplätze des Verbrechens, um ein paar Fotos zumachen...
Filminhalt:
Die Figur eines brutalen Serienkillers, der mit einem an seinem blutigen Armstumpf steckenden Hacken die Menschen aufschlitzt, mag erst mal nach einem primitiven Slasher klingen. Und auch die Story vom bösen Mann, dessen Namen man besser nicht aussprechen sollte, mag simpel und bekannt vorkommen. Doch trotz einiger blutiger Szenen unterscheidet sich für mich dieser Streifen deutlich von anderen Vertretern dieses Genres: Stattdessen liegt der Focus dieses Films m.E. auf der düsteren Atmosphäre.Das Drehbuch lässt den Charakteren etlichen Freiraum sich zu entfalten, und geradezu gemächlich lässt Regisseur Bernard Rose den Film starten. Candyman scheint zunächst nichts als eine urbane Legende, der nur in Phantasie der Menschen existiert, nicht aber in die Realität vordringen kann. Doch dann begibt sich die Protagonist in Welt von Candyman: Die heruntergekommene, trostlose Betonsiedlung einer Großstadt!
Es ist dies eine Kulisse, die ausgezeichnet zur düsteren Atmosphäre des Films passt. Verstärkt wird diese Atmosphäre noch durch den Soundtrack von Philip Glass, der den Film passend musikalisch begleitet. Geschickt gelingt es m.E. den Machern zudem die Balance zwischen einem alptraumhaften, aber ruhigen Handlungsaufbau. und den schockartigen, blutigen Szenen zu halten. Weder gerät der Film auf diese Weise in das Fahrwasser "klassischer Slasherfilme", noch fehlt es an Schockmomenten. Gerade die Mischung aus einer eher langsam und ruhig erzählten Geschichte und wie dem aus dem Nichts auftauchenden Schockszenen, tragen bestens zur Verdichtung der unheimlichen Atmosphäre dar. Hier wird m.E. nicht einfach auf plumpe Gewalt gesetzt, und wie Bernard Rose selbst (gemäß Booklet) resümiert, ist die Gewalt auch nicht das "Herzstück" seines Films. Vielmehr sieht Rose dies "mehr in der Beziehung zwischen Helen und dem mythologischen Candyman" (Booklet, S.14).
Diese "Beziehung" wurde m.E. nicht nur in ein eindrucksvolle Bilder gepackt, sondern auch schauspielerisch überzeugend umgesetzt: Tony Todd als Candyman schafft es ausgezeichnet die Rolle ausdrucksstark zu spielen. Aber auch Virginia Madsen spielt die verschiedenen Facetten ihrer Figur hervorragend. Sie kann ihrer Rolle die notwendige Glaubwürdigkeit verleihen, und den Wandel im Laufe des Films von einer selbstbewussten Wissenschaftlerin in eine Frau, die scheinbar dem Wahnsinn verfallen scheint, überzeugend darzustellen: War sie vielleicht gar selbst die Mörderin, und der Candyman nur in ihrem Kopf?...
Trotz der vielen starken Aspekte des Films ist "Candyman's Fluch" für mich aber kein 5-Sterne-Film, der sich im Olymp des Horrorgenre verweilt. Das Drehbuch ist gut, kann aber auf meiner Sicht nicht verbergen, das es letztlich auf einer KURZgeschichte ("The Forbidden" von Clive Barker) basiert, die auf Spielfilmlänge aufgebläht wurde. Außerdem sind mir aber für die Höchstwertung zu wenige geniale Momente geboten.
Insgesamt ist Candyman aber ein wirklich guter Horrorthriller: Gute 4/5 Sterne

Bildqualität:
Die Qualität des Bildes empfand ich für ein HD-Medium gut:
Die Detailschärfe lag meist auf einem guten Niveau, und die Farben wirkten auf mich relativ satt und insgesamt natürlich.
Das Bild erschien mir weder komplett glatt gefiltert, noch grobkörnig.
Nennenswerte Verschmutzungen oder gar Defekte sind mir beim Sehen nicht aufgefallen.
In Schulnoten insgesamt daher für das HD-Bild: Eine Zwei

Ton/Untertitel:
An Sprachspuren gibt es die deutsche oder englische Tonspur zur Auswahl.
Die deutsche Tonspur fand ich gut verständlich und klang für mich sauber.
Deutsche und englische Untertitel sind optional zuschaltbar.

Extras:
Insgesamt eine gute Ausstattung:
Auf der befindet sich ein englischer Audiokommentar mit Bernard Rose, Cliver Barker und Schauspielern. Leider ist der Audiokommentar aber nicht deutsch untertitelt.
Daneben gibt zwei Featurettes (insgesamt knapp 35 Minuten) zum Film bzw. Clive Barker, zwei Trailer (Original und VHS-Trailer), und Storyboardauszügen.
Das Booklet umfasst 28 Seiten und enthält neben Hintergrundinfos zum Film und Crew auch Material aus damaligen "Werberatschlag", sowie Kinoaushangsätze.

Zum Schluss noch ein Hinweis für Leser, für die das Thema "Original-Bildmaster" wichtig ist:
Das Bildmaster wurde an zwei Stellen (zumindest sind diese mir aufgefallen) lokalisiert (deutscher Titel bzw. deutsche Texteinblendung).

Candyman is a flawed but intriguing horror film based on a short story by Clive Barker, who Stephen King proclaimed as the future of horror. Directed by Bernard Rose, the plot follows scholar Helen Lyler (Virginia Madsen) as she writes a thesis on urban legends with her friend Bernadette (Kasi Lemmons). Together they investigate the Candyman (Tony Todd), a murderous ghoul with a hook for a hand who haunts a rough Chicago housing project, having supposedly committed two gruesome murders there. If you look in a mirror and say his name five times, he appears. He also inspires graffiti reading "sweets to the sweet" and leaves behind piles of candy, hence his name.
The film's problem is that it can't seem to decide if Candyman is an outright or tragic villain. He does terrible things, of course, though there are hints that he's a lost soul, from his dark back story, which is rooted in 19th century racism, to what he shares with Helen at the end. Also, Tony Todd is distinctly unscary. The hook and bloody stump are effectively grotesque, but they're at odds with the actor's placid, almost warm expression. There's none of the gleeful sadism Freddy Kreuger had, or the faceless menace which distinguished Michael Meyers, Jason Voorhees or even Darth Vader. More time could have been spent developing his back story, which is revealed in one brief monologue then never really mentioned again, except through symbolism. As an antagonist he's confusingly drawn. Why was one of his hands replaced with a hook? Why was he covered in honey then stung by bees? Of all the tortures his attackers could have used these felt oddly specific, and have no relevance to their motive. Maybe they wanted to give him a gimmick in case he did become an urban legend.
Madsen is a good actress, however, and I enjoyed her character's story arc. Unlike Candyman she's very convincing as a victim of fate; her development from a skeptic to what she becomes is compelling and haunting. A better approach might have been to focus on her and make Candyman a vaguer figure who may or may not exist only in Helen's mind. The film removes all doubt that Candyman exists in this world, but without a properly developed persona he has no bite. Still, he does have some nicely gory scenes and there's a certain poetry to the climax (I really liked the final shot).

This film is based upon a story written by British writer Clive Barker. More of a thriller than a stright horror movie, Virginia Madsen starts as Helen Lyle, a grad student at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She, and her friend, are writing a thesis on modern folklore. One story she is researching is of the "Candyman", a slave spirit with a hook hand who is said to haunt Chicago's notorious Cabrini-Green housing projects.

Upon hearing of a recent death at Cabrini-Green attributed to the Candyman, she wants to add a new chapter to her research. Helen investigates and interviews the witnesses who found the dead person and the circumstances which led to the murder. All agree- the Candyman did it.

Helen assumes that the people in the projects are simply buying into the urban legend of the Candyman and that there must be a rational explanation for the death. However, her doubt in the existence of the Candyman only provokes his anger to prove to her that he is indeed real, and not a figment of imagination.

The Candyman starts paying personal visits to Helen, and, under his demonic spell, new deaths occur all around her. She gets framed for those deaths and escapes a mental hospital to prove her innocence, and to save a child that the Candyman abducted from the projects.

Nice performances by Virginia Madsen and Tony Todd, along with the music by Philip Glass make this an effective thriller, a modern day ghost story, and a tragic tale of obsessed love.

Candyman est une, voire la meilleure, adaptation d'une oeuvre de l'autre maître du fantastique et de l'épouvante Clive Barker. Un spécialiste des histoires "infernales".

Une étudiante enquête sur l'étrange histoire d'un jeune riche noir américain du début du XXème siècle torturé, mutilé et massacré et qui depuis hante un quartier de sa ville.
Il suffit de l'appeler 5 fois devant un miroir pour qu'il revienne des enfers et se venge en massacrant tout ce qu'il trouve à l'aide de son crochet dégoulinant de sang frais.
La sublime Virginia Madsen apprendra à ses dépends qu'il ne fallait pas jouer à ce jeu.

Le secret de ce film qui n'a pas laissé un bon souvenir lors de sa sortie en France, son refait massacré et doublé en français, tient justement dans sa bande son.
Le film fait 90 minutes. Pendant les 45 première Bernard Rose, le réalisateur vous laisse vous alanguir, vous lasser même jusqu'à l'ennui. Mais à la 45ème minute précisément, les effets sonores entrent en fonction: Les vrais effets spéciaux de cette petite merveille de l'épouvante. Et pendant les 45 dernières minutes vous resterez crispé, collé à votre siège, terrorisé.

Et oui, il fallait l'entendre en VO pour l'apprécier (comme beaucoup de films) ! Donc faites-le en montant bien haut le son de votre TV et vous ne le regretterez pas !

J'ai attendu 20 ans tout juste pour l'acquérir et il valait bien toute cette attente.

A noter que l'épisode 11 de South Park saison 10 "Hell on Earth 2006" s'inspire de ce film avec un rappeur à la place de Candyman...

Bon film d'horreur comme on en faisait dans les années 90 juste après la déferlante des années 80. Le récit est captivant et on ne s'ennuie pas. La qualité d'image est correcte. Une curiosité qui devrait plaire aux inconditionnels des films différents.

Vu il y'a de nombreuses années, je l'ai littéralement redécouvert en Blu-ray, master de qualité, et le film sans être un chef d'œuvre est bien plus pertinent et profond que dans mes souvenirs, un bon film de Bernard Rose.

One of the few really original horror films of the 90s. It manages to sustain the suspense and has a strong atmosphere with quality actors and a strong script. It also does justice to the Clive Barker story it is based upon which is great because he is a brilliant writer but most of the film adaptations of his works have been really poor apart from this and hellraiser which he directed himself
