Una comedia bien hecha. Muy divertida, porque además los personajes se toman en serio a si mismos, con lo que se aleja de la risa fácil.

Estamos ante una de las mejores comedias inglesas de la historia por lo menos para mi gusto, una comedia ácida que toca sin complejos una próblematica como es el terrorismo Islamista. Dinamica, disparatada y subrealista así se podría definir el filme de Chris Morris, que sin pudor alguno le pone el toque cómico a un drama, sin llegar a ser una comedia negra, bordea perfectamente ese limite entre géneros.

Volviendo a la edición la calidad de imagen es excelente como nos tiene habituados CAMEO en todas sus ediciones en BR, el sonido un nitido 5.1 por eso que el lado técnico esta mas que cubierto. En cuanto a los extras nos deja un poco fríos presentando un triste trailer, que se compensa con un interesante corto llamado La culpa dirigido por David Victori.

En resumidas cuentas si quieres reírte y tener una de las mejores comedias britanicas de los últimos años esta es tu edición. Con una mas que notable relación calidad precio.

Etwas Übles braut sich im englischen Sheffield zusammen. Omar (Riz Ahmed), sein reichlich dämlicher Freund Waj (Kayvan Novak), der berüchtigte Barry (Nigel Lindsay) und der etwas naive Faisal (Adeel Akhtar) sind fest entschlossen Selbstmordattentäter zu werden.
Barry, der bei der Polizei schon einigermassen bekannt ist, rekrutiert dann noch mit Hassan (Asher Ali) einen fünften Mann.
Die Männer haben allerdings noch keinen konkreten Plan, sie pushen und stimmen sich aber gegenseitig immer mehr ins radikale Lager.
Omar ist der eigentlich Boss der Gruppe und auch der kluge Kopf der Gruppe. Obwohl der konvertierte Englänger Frau und Kind hat, gilt seine erste Priorität dem Dschihad.
Gemeinsam mit Waj bekommt er die Chance in ein Ausbildungslager nach Pakistan zu gehen. Dort geht aber alles drunter und drüber, was auf die naive Unerfahrenheit der zwei zurückzuführen ist.
Zurück in England werden die Pläne immer konkreter, vor allem Barry hat es sich in den Kopf gesetzt die örtliche Moschee zu sprengen. Mit dieser Aktion will man mehr Gotteskrieger für den Dschihad gewinnen, denn der Anschlag soll so aussehen als hätte die westliche Welt zugeschlagen.
Das erste Opfer wird eine Krähe, die für den heiligen Krieg eingespannt wurde.
Erst sehr spät entscheiden sich die Männer für den hiesigen Marathonlauf, dort sollen die Bomben platzen. Mit verschiedenen Kostümen, die den Sprengstoff verbergen, mischen sie sich als Honigmonster, als Mann mit einem Strauß, als Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtel und als Clown unter die anderen Teilnehmer. Aus der anfänglichen komischen und schwarzhumorigen Beschreibung wird bald die katastrophale Tragödie...
Die britische Filmkomödie "Four Lions" ist der Debütfilm von Chris Morris, der auch das Drehbuch verfasste.
"Four Lions" hat 2010 den Fresh-Blood-Publikumspreis beim Fantasy Filmfest gewonnen.
Klar dürfte auch sein, dass dieser respektlose Streifen auf alle Fälle Kontroversen auslösen musste. Der CSU-Bundestagsabgeordnete Stephan Mayer äusserte gar den Wunsch nach einer Verschiebung, da der Film aufgrund der immer wieder propagierten Terrorgefahr nur noch zusätzlich Öl ins Feuer giessen würde und Islamisten ihn - ähnlich wie die Mohammed Karikaturen - als weiteren Anlass für Anschläge nutzen könnten.
Tatsächlich hinterlässt der Film ein irritierende Wirkung, denn aus dem anfänglichen Klamauk, der vor allem dadurch möglich ist, dass man die Protagonisten so doof wie möglich darstellt, wird erst sehr spät - in den letzten 1o Minuten des Films - die Tragweite dieser Katastrophe klar.
Vorher hat man sich kaputt gelacht, weil eine Herde Schafe samt Bombenträger in die Luft flog und die Polizei so dämlich agierte, dass sie aus Versehen einen harmlosen "Wookie" abknallen - für mich sogar die beste und schwarzhumorigste szene des Films überhaupt.
Trotz gewisser Vorbehalte hat es Chris Morris zumindest bei mir geschafft einen nachhaltigen Effekt zu erzielen, der weit über die Klamauk-Komödie hinausgeht. Die Schlußszenen wirken in ihrer ganzen Absurdität schockierend, aber wie wir wissen ist dies bitterster Wahrheitsgehalt.
Vor allem geschieht vieles sehr unaufgeregt und nebenbei.
Trotz Respektlosigkeit und einiger Bedenken, ob man den Terror mit satirischer Comedy aufgreifen darf, ist "Four Lions" in vielen Punkten ein Volltreffer.

Like the Amazon reviewer, I approached this film wondering how on earth this could be anything other than a crass, inflammatory piece of junk. Yet I am writing this review the day after watching this superbly brave film. A bit like "The Full Monty", this film takes a bunch of Northern misfits/losers and creates characters with whom one empathises as they take desperate action. The massive difference is that they are not unemployed steelworkers seeking to save their relationships, they are would-be suicide bombers trying to kill as many people as possible.

There is slapstick, farce and many laugh-out loud moments. Yet you suddenly realise what you are laughing at and stop.

There are some flaws; the pacing is uneven, but I am not sure how one could fix that given the jolting nature of the storyline. The accents are tough to catch (OK, I am 46, but I am from Yorkshire).

For me though, there are three things that raise this film from 'good' to 'great'.

There are scenes that defy adequate explanation of the complexity that they convey. The main character played by Riz Ahmed sits with his wife and young son in a touching moment of family togetherness; but they are celebrating that he is to be a suicide bomber. In another scene, as policemen stand close by, he tells his wife that he and his team are on their way to commit mass murder. She struggles to conceal her love and pride. Even writing this, I know it sounds weird; just watch it and see for yourself.

The reason those scenes and many others work, and the second reason this is a great film, is Riz Ahmed's performance. It is quite simply brilliant. He is frightening as a coldly determined jihadist, yet as a family man he is warm and believable. His comic moments are superb. It would be so easy in the final scenes for this film to become crass or just lose one's trust and engagement. Yet Riz Ahmed evokes genuine sympathy for a man as he becomes a suicide bomber. Again, I could not have imagined I would say that.

The third reason this film works is the direction and writing. This film does not just walk a tightrope; it bounces up and down and swings from it. Yet it manages somehow to steer clear of pantomime, the grotesque and offensive whilst never shirking subjects that politicians run from like the plague. That takes judgement and skill of a very high order.

I was left confused by this film; not by the film itself but by a world where beliefs can lead people to such acts. There are some fascinating extras on the DVD; interviews with young British asian youths that I watched immediately after the film. It gave me a glimpse of a world I barely understand, where my values are utterly alien and where courage and commitment can be perverted to unspeakable ends.

Great comedy can make us think as well as laugh. I don't think I have ever seen anything that achieves that combination as well as this film.

Have to be honest. Never heard of this film. Saw it in Blockbuster shop and chose it on the basis of the review (12 "Funny"s from different sources surely something got to be right) And they are right - it is really funny and I thought the subject albeit extremely sensitive was pitch just right.

Basic storyline - 5 wannabes suicide bombers - all different characters - planning some sort of blowing up job - badly. The characters were fairly distinct - one an Asian born British with a more religious but peace loving brother who don't believe in concept of violence, one guy who don't really know what he's doing but hangs around, one complete mentalist convert "white" person into Muslim who's just want to do things, one Afro-Carribean Islamic guy who don't quite understand what really he's doing and another who just happen to be in it. The story also tells you a little more in detail about the main character. Similarly, it also potrays the ironicity of the other character - his peace loving brother. It's very stereotypical in one sense - but also makes you think. I really like the scene where the main character's brother and friends - all bearded in their traditional customes holding the umbrellas playing football in the rain asking him to join in. It makes you think that, a stereotypical view would consider these people "dangerous". But it also make you realise they are just another person and may not be what you perceive. So although funny, they are some poignant bits which makes you think.

There's no support of fundamentalist nor suicide bombers in the film but rather it takes a different twist on the whole issue. As I am a moderate Muslim myself, I actually thought it is beautifully done without feeling neither offended or think the subject potrayed over the top. The issues will always be difficult and you will get various response from everyone but it did make me laugh with tears in my eyes. I think you probably have to be British or have a British sense of humour to fully appreciate the jokes. Highly recommended! Well done!

There's a enough reviews about the story and the synopsis covers all you need to know. There are moments of farcical comedy that have you laughing out out loud, moments of deep pathos and drama but I found the balance to be right. The characters so believable with a superb cast of which the character of Barry ( Nigel Lindsay ) is the most stunning, manages to have you screaming with laughter one minute and wanting him to get his just desserts the next.

The film obviously came out at the height of the frenzy the media had whipped up about terrorists lurking around every corner and it's uncomfortable in places, barbed and unpleasant but that's one of the hallmarks of work by Morris. Much like John Sullivan ( Only Fools and Horses ), superb master of pathos but Morris obviously pushing much darker subjects. I love the proposition from Morris that I think fits with what most sensible people think, yes there are psychotics who think the world is against them and their chosen cause, yes they are most certainly dangerous but they are a tiny, tiny badly organised minority that we simply need to be alert for, mostly to protect them from themselves.

If you've never seen of any of Morris's work before this is a superb place to start, his really dark tendencies held in check for the big screen. Easily one of the best dark satirical comedy films to be made in the UK in years.

It takes a satirical genius like Chris Morris to provoke useful thoughts like the ones that abound in this splendid film. Perhaps the best is the realisation of the way some young Muslims can find themselves torn between a decent rejection of certain silly, misogynistic anachronisms of their "tradition," only to find themselves with no other option than to be bounced into an extremism that actually resembles the misguided machismo of their "Western" counterparts. It looks like the only "modernity" they can comfortably embrace, given the hardly ideal society in which they find themselves struggling to function (sorry if that sounds like Social Studies-speak: the film puts it across much more eloquently - and amusingly). The film puts clichés (and excuses) such as "alienation" and "isolation" into a context that's both critical and sympathetic, an achievement much bolstered by fine young actors who, with a scalpel-sharp script to work with, manage to be comedic in a way that invites ridicule and pity at the same time: very observant, accurate and empathetic work from all involved. You can always tell real laughter (as opposed to the forced, lazy stuff) by the way it brings people together. This is an intelligently hilarious movie, often painful and touching, too; probably the best way anyone's yet found to deal with a hideous problem in which we're all involved. Plus the best Heimlich Manoeuvre joke ever!

We first saw a bit of the back-end of this film when we turned over, waiting for our programme to start and thought it really funny - so made a mental note to look out for full film. Whilst I was purchasing something else on Amazon, it came up with this, amongst others, that I might like - how did it know I was looking for it - I never said? Anyway, it's absolutely fab. it starts off as any serious film would, but you soon realise that it is discreet comedy, taking a look at the lighter, definitely simpler side of some religious group's lives. It really is laugh after laugh with a serious bit of story going on. I cannot say what the story is or it would spoil it. All I can say is that it's not a Christian culture here, but it is very well portrayed and the writer is brilliant as are the actors in this. The only down side that in the making they did kill a sheep BY ACCIDENT. Go on, give it a whirl. If you have seen "In Bruge" and thought that was funny and very well written and acted, particularly Colin Farrel: then you'll really like this. On a similar par but where In Bruge was Irish, this is another culture.
