Micky Ward (Marc Wahlberg), geboren am 4. Oktober 1964 ist ein begeisterter Boxer und lebt in eher ärmlichen Verhältnissen in Lowell, Massachusetts.
Sein älterer Halbbruder Dickie Eklund (Christian Bale), ist ehemaliger Boxer und Mickys eher unzuverlässiger Trainer.
Die resolute Mom Alice (Melissa Leo) ist Managerin ihres aufstrebenden Sohnes.
Dickie schaffte es 1978 immerhin zu einem legendären Knock Out gegen Boxerlegende Sugar Ray Leonard (Sugar Ray Leonard).
Seither bröckelt aber sein Ruhm in der Heimatstadt, denn Dickie ist schwer cracksüchtig und die HBO dreht gerade einen Dokumentarfilm über ihn, allerdings geht es im Film um den Schwerpunkt Drogensucht und nicht um seinen ehemaligen Ruhm als Bezwinger von Sugar Ray Leonard.
Micky und Dickie sind grundverschieden. Während Dickie als Großmaul unterwegs ist, ist der jüngere Bruder eher still und ruhig. Er steht bislang im Schatten seines älteren Bruders und ist ein loyaler Familienmensch. Micky steht immer etwas zwischen den Dingen, zwischen seiner Mutter und seiner neuen Freundin, der Barkeeperin Charlene Fleming (Amy Adams), zwischen Familienbande und Erfolg, zwischen Sieg und Niederlange.
Jedenfalls macht es die Cracksucht des Bruders nicht einfach im Halbweltergewicht nach vorne zu kommen.
Auch mit Mom und den vielen Schwestern ist immer Zoff angesagt, die weiblichen Familienmitglieder mögen die "MTV-Schlampe" Charlene nicht sonderlich.
Während eines bevorstehenden Kampfes, der in Atlantic City (New Jersey) über die Bühne gehen soll, erfährt die Familie erst vor Ort, dass der ursprünglicher Gegner krank und dessen Ersatz 18 Pfund schwerer ist, wodurch dieser eigentlich in der höheren Gewichtsklasse kämpfen müsste.
Da man die Gage nicht verlieren will, entscheiden Dickie und Mom sich für den Kampf. Es kommt zu einer sehr schmerzlichen Niederlage...
David OŽRussells Boxerfilm "The Fighter" ist ein Biopic und erzählt vom schwierigen und steinigen Werdegang des Profiboxers Micky Ward, der aus dem Arbeitermilieu stammt und sich nach oben boxen muss.
Seinen ersten Titel (WBU Intercontinental Titel im Halbweltergewicht) gewinnt der Boxer dann am 13. April 1996 gegen Louis Veader durch ein KO in der 9. Runde.
Dabei wandelt Russell geschickt zwischen Action im Boxring und sozialem Drama aus der Unterschicht.
Spontan auffallend sind die überzeichneten Frauenfiguren, allen voran die Schwestern des Boxers. Und auch an Christian Bales oscarprämiertes Overacting muss man sich erstmal gewöhnen.
Dafür spielt aber Mark Wahlberg den Titelhelden sehr glaubwürdig, er legt seine Figur zuerst sehr schweigsam und im realen Leben eher schwach an. Einer, der nur im Boxring das Sagen hat, ansonsten bestimmen andere über sein Leben. Im Laufe der Zeit kann er sich aber aus dieser passiven Position heraus kämpfen.
Auch Melissa Leos Rolle der Mom ist gut gespielt, sie zeigt auch sensible Konturen im Innern einer sehr dominierenden Rolle.
"The Fighter" bekam sehr gute Kritiken und gewann zwei Oscars (Melissa Leo, Christian Bale), einige Kritiker verglichen den Boxerfilm gar mit Martin Scoreses Meisterwerk "Raging Bull".
Dies ist natürlich etwas verwegen. Wobei ich schon finde, dass OŽRussell ein recht unterhaltsamer, amüsanter und spannender Boxerfilm im Stile von Rocky, nur etwas realistischer, gelungen ist.

Known as the "Pride of Lowell (Massachusetts)", Dicky Eklund's (Christian Bale) primary claim to fame is his 1978 boxing match with Sugar Ray Leonard, where Eklund knocked down Leonard, who eventually won the match. In 1996, Eklund, now a crack addict, is in front of the cameras as an HBO film crew is making a documentary about him, the focus he believes (falsely) to be his boxing comeback at close to age 40. For the past ten years, he has also acted as one of the two trainers for his decade younger half brother,Micky Ward (Mark Wahlberg), who is known primarily as a brawler used by other boxers as a stepping stone to better boxers. Both their careers are managed by their domineering mother Alice Ward (Melissa Leo) who believes it better to keep it all in the family. Because of his crack addiction, Dicky is unreliable. A move by Dicky and Alice at one of Micky's fights makes Micky come to the realization that his boxing career is being stalled and perhaps even under-minded by the two, who are only looking out for themselves. This stance is fostered by Micky's new girlfriend, college drop-out and now local bartender Charlene Fleming (Amy Adams). As Micky tries boxing life without Dicky and Alice - much to their anger - he has to figure out where they fit into his life, especially as they do not get along with Charlene, if at all. These decisions become all the more important as Micky moves up the ranks and is given a shot at the world welterweight championship

While on the surface The Fighter seems to be juyst another boxing movie it is in reality much more. The film focuses on family relationships and on what it means to be a hometown legend. Director Davis O. Russell and producer Wahlberg have created a film that richly desrved the Oscar nominations that it received. The film provides a look beyond the sport into the lives of the people and their problems and triumphs. The acting by the entire cast makes this film one of the must see films of last year.

The Blu Ray disc comes with a wealth of special features including a commentary track by Russell, two featurettes: one a detailed look at the history of the project and the making of the film; the other a look at the town of Lowell, Massachusetts and its boxing history. A series of deleted scenes some with Russell commentary are also presented.

The Fighter was one of the surprise hits of 2010 and deserves a wider audience which it may well get in this excellent DVD package.

BioPics are tough. If you cover too long a period of time, then the picture becomes too thin in terms of dialogue. If you cover too short a period of time, then the picture becomes but a chapter and tends to have too much crammed in. Like I said, it is a tough balance. Director Dvid O. Russell (who just won praise for "Silver Linings Playbook") balances the story of suffering brother/boxer Mickey (Mark Wahlberg) and his new romance with the empowering Amy Adams played against Mickey's half brother Dickey (Christian Bale) and mother (Melissa Leo). Dickey is known as a former boxer who once fought Sugar Ray Leonard. Unfortunately, along with Dickey comes his drug addiction to crack and Melissa Leo as his enabling mother who is so proud of Dickie's past that she does a terrible job as Mickey's current manager.

Both Bale and Leo deserved the Oscar's they won which, by itself, make this a movie worth seeing. However, Amy Adams is also terrific as is the texture of the editing and the screenplay. The movie starts off by introducing the major events via a documentary that is being shot by HBO on Dickey. He thinks it is about his "comeback" to the ring when in fact, it is about Dickey's fall to drugs.

Regardless of what version of the film you purchase, you can supplement it by simply visiting YouTube. There, you can watch the original HBO documentary that details Dicky Eklund's fall into drugs as well as the fights re-enacted for the movie. Where the movie stops after Micky's 2000 fight against Shea Neary, you can also view on YouTube the Ring Magazine's 2001 Fight of the Year (Ward beats Emanuel Augustus), Ring Magazine's 2002 Fight of the Year (Ward beats Arturo Gatti) and Ring Magazine's 2003 Fight of the Year (Arturo Gatti beats Ward).

Like I said, Biopics are tough. David O. Russell nailed this one. It is well worth the time. If you like the sweet science (hello fellas), this is a movie worth watching. If boxing isn't your thing (hello ladies), there are two REALLY STRONG female leads in Amy Adams and Melissa Leo. In addition, the women who portray the sisters/half-sisters are as tough as nails. Their real life nicknames are Red Dog, Tar, Pork, Beaver, Boo Boo and Little Alice. Damn, that sounds like a prison gang in which I wold keep my distance. But fear not as they only exist on your TV screen. Worth a rental, perhaps even a buy if the price is right. Enjoy!

Ich habe mir den Film angesehen und habe mich immer wieder gefragt, warum das Gefühl nicht weg gehen wollte, hier stimme etwas nicht. Ich habe es dann erst im Rückblick gemerkt, nachdem ich das ein und andere nachgelesen hatte.

Eigentlich ist "der Fighter" die Geschichte von Micky Ward. Er war ein Kämpfer mit enormen Nehmerqualitäten und hat einige sensationelle Kämpfe geliefert. Gleich mehrfach wurde einer seiner Kämpfe von der Fachpresse als "der Kampf der Jahres" ausgezeichnet, ebenso auch einige Runden als "die Runde des Jahres". Das ist schon sensationell, denn in der allerersten Liga des Boxens hat Micky Ward eigentlich nicht gekämpft. Aber wie es der Titel des Films zurecht sagt, er war eben ein bemerkenswerter Fighter.

Woran hat es also gehakt, und warum stimmt es auch nicht, was auf dem Cover stand: der Film ist eben nicht "so cool wie Rocky" und wohl auch nicht "so bewegend wie Eastwoods Million Dollar Baby"? Er ist auch kein "furioser Boxerfilm. Süddeutsche Zeitung."

Es liegt an etwas, was wiederum stimmt: "Der Fighter bietet erstklassiges Schauspielerkino. TV Spielfilm." Es ist aber nicht die Schauspielleistung von Mark Wahlberg (Micky Ward), sondern von Melissa Leo (seiner Manager-Mutter im Film) und von Christian Bale (seinem Halbbruder Dicky). Beide haben den Oscar für die besten Nebenrollen in diesem Film bekommen und weil sie sensationell gut spielen, rutscht der eigentliche Held des Film ein wenig in den Hintergrund. Das erstaunliche daran ist, dass die Story dadurch so richtig rund wird - sie wird eben nur nicht aus der Perspektive des Boxers erzählt, sondern ebenso, eher eher mehr noch, aus der Perspektive des Umfelds der Familie.

Der eine Stern Abzug liegt an dieser Diskrepanz. Ich hätte gern einen Film gesehen, der mehr auf Micky Ward zentriert gewesen wäre, der auch seine spektakulären Kämpfe gegen Arturo Gatti gezeigt hätte. War es einem Teil 2 zugedacht? Ich werde beim nächsten Mal mit einer anderen Haltung an den Film rangehen und ihn mir dann auch in englischer Sprache ansehen.

The Fighter, as a movie, deserved all the praise it received for its excellent acting performances. That said, I would rather focus on the DVDs themselves albeit briefly. The video is sharp and clean with the blacks clearly passing pluge with good details in the blacks and grays. The extras kept my interest and while there were many shots in these extras of the main real life individuals, I would have liked to have heard from the real mother and sisters as well.
My biggest criticism is that rather lack luster audio which made poor use of the surrounds or even the left and right front channels. Granted, much of this movie is dialogue driven but when a car runs over the trash can from left to right, there was very little use of the right channel. Even the fight scenes where surrounding crowd noise should be heard from all channels, the punched up music took away from that reality 'you are at the arena' scenario.
Was I glad to have ordered the Fighter? Yes, it is a great movie and its realism realms high over the majority of boxing movies. Discounting the lack of its audio potential, still a good one for the collection.
All my movie reviews are of this nature and focus only on the quality of the transfer to BluRay so check them and see if they are of help as well.
Hopefully, this review has been of some help to you in determining your purchase, hope I am on the correct path with a review of the transfer quality as opposed to providing plot summaries.

This is not a boxing hero movie. But it's still exciting and watcheable.
The director has it's own way of making movies.
We all know he is a notorious director but still he makes a lot of good movies. And this is one of them.
The actors are good and look different then usual.
Christian Bale is very unique and different looking and I liked to see him that way very much.
IThe runnng time was almost 2 hour but I never felt boring.
This was third time watching it and still felt fresh.

Ein recht gelungener Film über das Leben und den Werdegang des Boxers Micky Ward (Mark Wahlberg) , der im Film durch und mit seinem Stiefbruder Dicky Eklund (Christian Bale). Wahlberg hat eigentlich die Hauptrolle, aber Bale gibt dem Film seinen Stempel. Es ist keine Heldensaga der Marke Rocky, sondern der Film zeigt die dunkle und dreckige Seite dieses Geschäfts, bei dem dann auch schon mal Familie und Beziehungen auf der Strecke bleiben. Treibkraft ist immer das Geld und daher ist Dicky Eklund zeitweise auch mehr Gangster als Boxer und die Kämpfe wirken auch echter als man es sonst aus Hollywood gewohnt ist. Ein guter Mark Wahlberg und ein großartiger Christian Bale, der für seine Rolle zu recht einen Oscar bekam, machen diesen Film für mich zu einem der wenigen schauspielerischen Höhepunkte der letzten beiden Jahre. Auf meiner Wertung erreicht der Film daher auch 9/10, zumal er dank eines Wendecovers nun auch meine Sammlung schmückt.

Its a pretty good movie. To me the most impressive thing is the acting of Christian Bale. If you are familar with him, he speaks with a very heavy british accent. But in this movie, you would swear hes native from Boston. I love his character. A washed-up has-been boxer who is now a lowly depraved crack addict. His acting is perfect to me. The movie itself is pretty good, only a little slow at times. There arent actually many fight scenes but the ones there are, are good. Its very Rocky-like. Especially the final climactic fight scene, its very energizing.
