Usually I can’t digest super hero movies, but bought this for my 6-year old super-hero-obsessed son who recently read an early-reader book about the topic. As a concept and movie experience it will most likely have a lasting impact on him. And he would probably rate it with 10 stars.
I must admit the movie is quite well done reasonably smart, combining likable developing characters, very engaging visuals/effects, an excellent soundtrack and superb fast-paced action. What more do you want? Well, a superhero that differs from all before him. And that is also included.

The story line is somewhat interesting with some levels of complexity and surprise; T’Challa has risen to the throne of Wakanda after his father, T’Chaka, the previous king, died in a bomb attack. However T’Challa’s idealized father turned out to be in a dubious partnership an arms dealer and the villain Eric Killmonger to profit from Wakanda’s wonder-substance vibranium. Killmonger aims to win the throne and turns out to be family orphaned by T’Challa’s father’s murderous past. In the end it all comes down to a contest between T’Challa and Killmonger. Does Killmonger stand the villain-test? Yes, it’s not a one-dimensional person, the character actually develops through grief and lacks the common megalomaniacal madness.

If you ask me, it’s a refreshing Afro-science-fiction/espionage-thriller with a veneer of diversity and that takes on traditional colonialism.

We bought the 3D version that does proper justice to the cinematic experience; the, colours, the scenery and CGI comes across really well. And I continue to favour 3D at home on my high end 4k TV set over the 3D experience wit most movies in cinema.

Another win for the MCU!

This is yet another excellent addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a thoughtful story about the dangers of xenophobia & isolationism, sumptuous production design and amazing costumes that wonderfully evoke the feeling of a country that has remained unsullied by exploitation & corruption. The cast is excellent across the board, Kilmonger is an especially good villain and it's good to see so many strong women take centre stage without even a hint of them being just 'decoration' and 'love interests'. They are powerful characters with positions of responsibility who just happen to be women and the film is much the better for it. Wakanda itself feels like a real, breathing place and if the designers don't garner at least a nomination come awards season I'll be very surprised.

Another thing that surprises me is seeing how the film is currently only rated at 3.5 stars. Looking at many other MCU films here, the rating tends to be four to five stars yet Black Panther, one of the strongest entries, is at the moment rated lower that Justice League, Solo and The Last Jedi... why is that, I wonder? Of course there will be people who genuinely don't like Black Panther... that's true of any MCU movie (heck, any MOVIE for that matter), yet after seeing several reviews suggesting "this movie only got rave reviews because of the black cast", I have to wonder how widespread the alt-right campaign to knock down the film's Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB score actually was. Hopefully Black Panther will garner better reviews once confirmed purchasers have their say. It is a pity to see such a strong film with a justifiably huge box office take be tarnished by people who may have an 'agenda' of their own.

Superhero movie in a league of its own

So many super hero movies seem to be made with just an idea for special effects battle scenes, linked by some often unimaginative linking scenes. Black Panther is one of the exceptions, and like the only other superhero movie I rate as highly, Wonder Woman, the film has a definite character building narration, detailing the lives of the hero/heroine from childhood on. Of course the fact that Wonder Woman is female, and Black Panther an African American could well be the reason these stories work so well. Will the next unusual superhero be a gay man or lesbian, or perhaps have a disability (I don’t count Daredevil)? That would be great.
The other terrific idea about Black Panther is the way the culture he comes from turns the white/black dynamic on its head, with the small African country our hero comes from being enormously wealthy, and technically much advanced, ahead of any other nation in the world, though they keep this a tight secret. It’s a great story, brilliantly put together and played by a great cast. And when a movie is planned in 3D and doesn’t have it slapped on later, it works, though I find that watching a 3D movie on my giant screen at home works more effectively than in the cinema. Both BP and WW will be movies I’ll happily watch again and again when I need a rousing cheer up!

I loved every minute of this. From the fabulous production design to the passionate performances to the powerful female characters to the fact that white faces were not, for once, the dominant ones onscreen. Black Panther is the shot in the arm that Hollywood has needed for a long time, showing in a single movie how absolutely stupid is the idea that a black superhero film is a niche project. Chadwick Boseman owns the marquee, and was a tragic loss to the world of film, but we still have the many other magnificent black actors showcased in this movie. Hollywood's challenge now is to work with them to forge the mainstream movie careers they so obviously deserve. No looking back. Wakanda forever!
