This is pretty much what you would expect from a book starring and narrated by Deadpool. Deadpool's insanity and all the fourth-wall breaking that comes with it is in full effect here. The blurb on the back cover is from Deadpool talking up his own book and he talks to the reader quite a bit. Wade isn't particularly happy to be in a prose novel because he has to spend so much time describing everything whereas in a comic he could just show it with pictures.
The story is pretty wacky as well. Some evil villain has genetically engineered a bunch of monsters but before becoming those monsters they start out as puppies. There's no way to tell which puppies are infected with the monster DNA prior to their transformation so Deadpool basically has to go around and steal a bunch of puppies just in case. Throw in an entertaining cameo by Spider-man and you've got a pretty good time.

When I got this book I didn't know what to expect. As it turns out, the story was kinda cool. And the prose format was a unique change of pace compared to the usual comic book format. Anyway, the book is about Deadpool having to hunt down puppies that turn into monsters. And of course, since it's Deadpool, things don't exactly go smooth. Overall, I really liked this book, and I recommend it to anyone who both likes Deadpool and doesn't mind reading plain words instead of comic panels.

We I just finished reading this novel. I would love to see the comic book version of this book. Just by reading this book I can see Ryan Reynolds doing this story of Deadpool as a pg-13 film.

Absolutely brilliantly hilarious read! The author stays true to Deadpool, although it was a bit strange at first to read it from first person POV. As a writer, Stefan Petrucha definitely has an excellent talent with words. The way he paints the story, I feel like I'm reading a well done Deadpool comic, or watching a good Marvel movie.
This book was so hilarious that I could read it only a little at a time because I was laughing too hard from beginning to end. Worth every cent, letter and second you have with it!

Stefan Petrucha, you did an OUTSTANDING of capturing Deadpool's essence at his core. The story follows the comics and I'm loving the tone, action and humor (I pause at every page and crack up laughing). Enjoying this as much as the movie. And the fourth wall breaking when Deadpool refers to you and your writing is pure GENIUS (like the first paragraph of Chapter 9, Hahahaaaa)!!!!!!!

I was skeptical of how Deadpool would translate into a novel despite seeing it technically pulled off in fanfiction many times…and I was right to be skeptical.

Petrucha's Deadpool is a mix between Way's and Duggan's; actually it seems like he put Way's Deadpool in Duggan's settings. Some back story is explained but it makes it just more obvious that they were picking and choosing what they want to include about Deadpool; with the description of his relationship with Bob, the relationship we see with Preston, and the fact that he still has his "boxes" this takes place perhaps slightly before 2015's Battleworld and yet halfway into Way's run.

All that can be excused, he's a comic book character after all, but the premise of the book is horrible. There are a ton of puppies spread around the city that are about to turn into monsters so Deadpool has to catch 'em all. You have no reason to care whether he succeeds or fails so the book rests on the assumption that you'll be so engrossed in the prose that the plot is inconsequential, but that didn't go so well either.

The action is constant and well written which is a good portion of what you're looking for when you buy a Deadpool book of any kind but more than anything he is supposed to sell humor and that just didn't work here. Petrucha went for a very slapstick approach to his humor that he just couldn't translate from a comic book page. The fact that he had to constantly keep Deadpool talking to you and needed to incorporate two other voices in into his internal dialogue seems to be a burden to Petrucha, which it would be for anyone, many people even argue it never worked in the comic either. Most always any joke fell incredibly flat for me but as humor is subjective I'll say that I find Deadpool the most engaging and humorous when he's walking the line between carelessly silly and heartbreakingly depressing.

I will say that if you do still want to "read" this I would suggest the audiobook. The voice acting is extremely good and sells the joke slightly better.

Excellent read. It was a lot of fun. It takes place in the present day & made me smile/laugh every bit as much as the comics. If you love reading Deadpool, you'll love reading this too - maybe even more because it's so detailed.
