Lingo Mastery has embarked on a mission – to make Spanish more accessible to a wider population. In the Introductory Note the goal is stated well: ‘This book is a collection of 10 short reads, so they can be read separately or all at once. These short stories were written specially for Spanish language intermediate and advanced learners and it seeks to provide a comprehensive experience in the language and to expose students to a rich and practical vocabulary suitable for the Spanish skills of the learner. Learning a foreign language is always a challenge. However, it doesn’t have to be as complicated as it may seem. Being constantly exposed to the language one aims to master is the best way to speed up the learning process. It’s not just by listening to a language that you get to learn it. Reading has also been proven to be a very effective way to learn a foreign language as it helps the student to become familiar with the proper grammar use, the rhythms, forms and rules of the language and according to research, it exposes the pupil to more sentences per minute than the average movie or TV show. One of the first things we must acquire when learning a new language is a voracious appetite for its reading materials. As challenging as it seems at first, it can soon become second nature, and its practical use will further motivate you to learn the language faster and better. Do you as a teacher or as a student of the Spanish language identify yourself with this situation? If your answer is yes, then this book is for you. These stories were created with intermediate and advanced difficulties in mind and are aimed to provide good exposure to grammar and vocabulary while making it accessible in a grammatical and narrative way. The stories are fluid, continuous and filled with a variety of helpful vocabulary combined with a grammatical richness. Additionally, at the end of each story, a learning support section will help you whenever you need it by providing you with English definitions of difficult words, a summary of the story and multiple-choice questions about important features of the story. This will allow you to follow all the details of each story and thus, to improve at a fast pace.’

Each of the ten stories follows the pattern Resumen de la historia, Summary of the story, Vocabulary Questions about the story, and Answers. Or as the authors state, ‘The stories include a variety of circumstances, mainly in the context of travelling abroad, studying, and personal relationships - topics that both young and mature readers will easily identify with and feel compelled to continue reading. Through the book, you will find bolded words. These are the words we thought you might consider difficult or useful phrases you may find worth memorizing. The definition for each one of these words or phrases can be found in the vocabulary section. After the vocabulary section you will find a summary that provides a condensed version of the story in both English and Spanish. This is especially helpful in case you get lost as you read, as it allows you to go back and make sure you are not missing any important details. Finally, at the end of the learning support feature you will find a set of five multiple choice questions about the story you just read. Try to answer them without any help, and after doing so, check the answers provided at the end of the section.‘

The stories vary, as do the lessons taught. This is a very fine introduction to Spanish, appropriate for all more experienced learners, and a book much needed at this time in our national status! Grady Harp, June 18

One of my many complaints with American language teaching is the emphasis on material that students wouldn't read unless they had to. Even some of the story collections on Amazon suck--medieval knights and explorers don't do it for most of us, and how can we learn how to find our way around the train system or find entertainment if the only transportation mentioned in our studies is horseback?. Lingo Mastery has a very good series of stories which are actually chapters in the narrator's journey through Latin America--PRESENT-DAY Latin America, with modern vocabulary that you can USE. I'm halfway through these and eager to see what happens next.

The story kept me engaged, I understood the just of it, and learned some new words no doubt (hopefully I’ll still remember them). I laughed a few times here and there. It was mostly lighthearted fun. I say mostly because the way it ended was actually unexpected. I won’t give it away, but it’s pretty bittersweet.

All in all, this was an enjoyable read. Anyone trying to learn Spanish, I highly recommend it. Find yourself a copy and check it out, you won’t know what you’ll find in store.

I found this book quite accessible after a couple of years of studying Spanish on-line with Duolingo. There is a clear attempt to write modern stories that will be relevant to today's readers (e.g., the first story deals with young people trying to get past the doorman at a night club). The literary quality is not high, but I'm sure that is because the vocabulary is limited to that of intermediated readers. In light of the previous sentence, I just gave the book an extra star.

This book is not actually collection of short novels but continuous story of young student traveling in South America. It is captivating and quite fun to read. Story is easy to follow and there are vocabularies at end of each chapter plus short summary both in Spanish and English. It also broadens one's selection of possible discussion areas by cultivating the reader in many interesting topics.

I use this book weekly for my intermediate Spanish class online. My instructor uses Zoom and my class of 4 students goes over the story in detail and practice altering sentences and verb tenses. It's challenging but enjoyable.
