There rarely seems to be anything in between where Brian De Palma films are concerned, cinematic lovers of all kinds by and large either trash or laud his films. Femme Fatale is no different, one critic - both professional or amateur - will have it as a 1/10 movie, another will have it at the maximum rate available. Femme Fatale is high grade stuff if one is either a De Palma fan or a lover of film noir. Conversely if these two things don't tick your film loving boxes then the law of averages suggests you should have - or should - stayed/stay away from it.

De Palma opens up the doors to his fun house and invites noir lovers to come on in and enjoy. It's difficult to write about the plot because it holds many twists and turns, it's a veritable supply of uppers and downers, twisters and benders, all sexed up and pumped full of De Palma's trademark tricks and devilish rug pulls. In truth the story and set-up is predictable, but the journey is what makes the pic ooze quality and bare faced cheek, with the director giggling away like a schoolgirl in the background.

Opening up with a sequence that sees our titular fatale (Rebecca Romijn-Stamos) watching famed noir classic Double Indemnity, De Palma proceeds to homage and love the film noir world. As he uses split-screens, canted angles, up-tilt shots, shadow plays etc, the narrative pulses with eroticism and impending cruelty, this really is a femme fatale based movie of the grandest kind. As events unfurl, with hapless photographer Nicola Bardo (a fun packed Antonio Banderas) caught in the web, Ryuichi Sakamoto's magnificent classical based score swirls around like some sort of peeping tom. The latter of which finds a shifty accomplice in Thierry Arbogast's noir photography.

It's a picture awash with dupes, dopes and vengeful criminals, where the themes of identity, duality, sexuality and distorted perceptions gnaw away at those investing fully in the viewing experience. Some critics (prof and amat) have lazily likened the film to David Lynch's Mulholland Drive, as if De Palma in 6 short months watched Lynch's movie and then knocked this film out! The copy-cat charge as funny as the rug-pull that De Palma pulls here. Besides, as any film noir lover will tell you, this has more in keeping with Fritz Lang's 1944 noirer "The Woman in the Window" than Lynch's film, which is no bad thing at all, and De Palma knew that. 8/10

I thought this movie was fantastic. I know that people said it was "overdone" and too contrived, but I think thye utterly missed the point and the attention to detail that De Palma put in, as well as the superb performance of Stamos in her "debut" leading role.
I thought this films ONLY difficult point was the admittedly critical plot device which happens half-way to three-quarters of the way through. It is probably what killed the film for most people, because it just comes at you from nowhere, and it is jarring and it is contrived. However, if you get passed HOW the plot device is done, and ignore WHY it might have happened (two biggies), I'm telling you, it does make every single second of the entire film make perfect sense.
Why are all the clocks stopped at the same time throughout most of the film? What are the pictures on the wall (both the recurring posters and the photographs)? What is the gift for? What are the choices that we make and what part do they play in our future, and of those around us. All of this is revealed in detail.
This film is about choices, and the infinite number of universes (a legitimate theory of Quantum Physics) which are spawned by every action we take in the world. Our choices matter. And De Palma made a film which explores that in a very fanciful way.
It is not De Palma's best film. The Untouchables, Body Double, Scarface and Dressed To Kill are certainly his masterworks in his Oeuvre. My personal favorite though, of all of his, is Phantom Of The Paradise, which is one of the most fantastic films ever made, period, in addition to being a more enjoyable Rock Opera than Tommy.
But I loved Femme Fatale, despite it's flaws, and I've added to my collection of his favorites!
Oh...and Rebecca is not only a great actress in this ...
Expect a bumpy ride, but like a good rollercoaster, enjoy it, even if there are some spots you wished had been smoothed out.

Bei >Femme Fatale< handelt es sich um die Wiederveröffentlichung eines Phil Defrys Films mit Sharon da Valle und Maria Mia in den weiblichen Hauptrollen, den ich zwar noch nicht kannte, der aber, wie andere aus der Reihe, vor einigen Jahren unter anderem Titel wohl schon einmal herausgekommen sein muß. Das Bildformat ist 4:3, die Gesamtlaufzeit beträgt knapp 58 min, als Extra gibt es eine 1:06 min lange Slideshow mit 14 Stills aus dem Film und vier Trailer aus der Reihe New Sex Line, allesamt Wieder-Veröffentlichungen aus den Beständen der vormals >Better Sex Line< von Erotic Entertainment / Orion / Uhse-Konzern. Coverfotos und Marketing-Text haben mit dem Inhalt wenig zu tun.

Story: Sharon da Vale als Kunstmalerin gibt eine Suchanzeige nach einem Aktmodell auf, lesbelt mit ihrer Freundin Maria Mia im Treppenhaus, auf dem Dachboden und im Bett. Maria Mia joggt in sexy Pants durch einen Park und duscht. Als sich ein männliches Aktmodell bei Sharon meldet, zeichnet sie ihn, Maria kommt dazu und es beginnt ein Liebesspiel, dem sich Sharon nach Fertigstellung der Zeichnung anschließt. Die kolorierte Zeichnung wird schließlich zum Ausstellungs-Plakat.

Der Film ist im typischen Phil-Defrys-Stil gedreht (soweit er keinen speziellen Fetisch behandelt), das heißt es gibt viele softe weibliche Schlüsselreize mit langsamen Bewegungen in cineastisch kunstvollen Einstellungen, mit sorgfältig konstruiertem, oft verkantetem Bildaufbau, häufig leicht weichgezeichnet, zwischendurch mit Schwarzweiß-Sequenzen, das Ganze fast ohne Dialoge mit moderner, unauffällig passender Musik zu einem Traum-artig wirkenden Gesamt-Kunstwerk montiert. Wenn man sich darauf einlässt, so wirken die Bilder sehr erotisch. Ein gewisser geistiger Gleichklang mit dem Künstler ist dabei wohl von Vorteil.

Somehow I missed this movie when it first came out quite a few years ago, but recently saw it used in a song on a youtube video & knew I had to see it. So I bought it here and received it within 3 days. Loaded with special features, making of and the like, excellent quality video and sound, a movie definitely worth buying on DVD for one will want to watch it again, and again. I would rate this a definite R, for heavy sexual content and violence. Others have reviewed the story line and movie itself, all I can add is that this is one of the best, if not THE BEST, femme fatale movies I've seen.

If you're a movie buff like me you will watch this movie to compare some really obvious shots that are classic Brian DiPalma, especially the way the film moves. If you're not, you will get this movie at a steal of a price just to see Rebecca Romijn totally strip and tease you while on a pool table.(Great scene) Its a decent story with a real twist ending. Not lighting the world on a fire, but def not a bad movie. Hot tub time machine is a bad movie. This just isn't Brian DiPalma's best. Worth your time...

No offense intended towards the reviewer name "Sparkel" but he/she needs to WATCH the movie, in its entirety to KNOW why the woman in the bathroom stall 'allowed' her diamonds to be stolen. ...went right over your head i guess.
loved the film, and was suprised that i waited over a year to see it and was refreshingly suprised with what i saw. EVEN if you disagree with depalma's style or the overall quality of the film, you'll (provided you're breathing) will love the visuals and how stunningly beautiful rebecca and her french 'freind' are.

Giallo e azione al limite del grottesco, il film è un buon mix di emozioni più profonde e drammatiche ,la storia della sua protagonista e del suo doppio, il sogno rivelatore. Location Paris in una quartiere non molto visitato, sopratutto la gradinata fantastica della chiesa del 17° arrondissmont. Antonio Banderas molto credibile, ironico nel suo ruolo di fotografo free- lance. Lo conoscevo da anni, vale averlo nello storico di Brian de Palma
